- Directs, organizes, and administers the Athletic Training Program.
- Directs, instructs, and supervises the activities of the four other full-time Athletic Trainers.
- Prevention and evaluation of athletic injuries and illnesses.
- Recruits, supervises, and develops Athletic Trainers.
- Directs and administers the provision of athletic training services including the prevention, care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries of several intercollegiate athletic teams.
- Provides first aid and emergency aid for athletic-related injuries and determines appropriate medical referral as warranted.
- Creates, develops, and implements therapeutic interventions and rehabilitative protocols to treat athletic injuries.
- Organizes pre-participation Physical Exams.
- Coordinates and assists with home and away event athletic training coverage.
- Assists with coordination and scheduling of medical coverage for home and away competitions.
- Purchases, inventories, and monitors all supplies and equipment for Athletic Training.
- Works with doctors and other allied health professionals to deliver care to student athletes.
- Coordinates all athletic injury insurance.
- Organizes and administers drug testing per department policy.
- Helps monitor weather conditions and dangerous environments (humidity/lightning).
- Ensures the Athletic Department staff maintains First-Aid, CPR and AED certification.
- Responsible for implementation and rehearsal of health and safety best practices.
- Familiarity with NAIA governing rules and ability to adhere to all policies, rules and regulations of the NAIA and Ave Maria University.
- Provide qualified and adequate athletic training coverage for student athletes.
- Recruit and provide training to athletic trainers.
- Manage multiple tasks in a demanding environment, organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities.
- Integrate resources, knowledge of management methods and ability to provide administrative guidance within area of responsibility and provide direct training and supervision as needed.
- Apply budgeting and fiscal planning techniques within financial constraints.
- Establish and maintain effective work relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the public.
- Communicate effectively - orally, by phone, in person, and in writing.
- Represent the department and University in a friendly, courteous, and professional manner.
- Respond to emergency situations in a timely manner.
- Use a personal computer, Microsoft Office software, and other office equipment.
- Commitment to the mission, values, goals, and plans of Ave Maria University as a Catholic higher education university as expressed in Ex Corde Ecclesiae.

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Director of Sports Medicine is responsible for program building including planning, recruiting, managing, and directing the athletic training program, and for supervising and providing care for student athletes competing in the University's athletic program.
As the head athletic trainer, the Director of Sports Medicine is responsible for the prevention, evaluation, management, and rehabilitation of injuries within the University's comprehensive sports medicine program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Master's degree required
EXPERIENCE:
Four years minimum of collegiate athletic training experience.
CERTIFICATION/
LICENSURE:
Must be certified by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification and possess state athletic training licensure, certification, or registration.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
PHYSICAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Requires ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to attend and treat athletes at home and away games, with the ability to stand, walk and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of pounds.
Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual and auditory acuity to exam and treat athletes.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors with some potential for exposure to safety and health hazards related to electronics work, exposure to outdoor elements, and moderate to loud noise levels.
While performing the duties of this position, the employee may be required to work evenings and weekends, and to travel overnight to cover away games.
