    Registered Nurse - External Experienced Training Program - Pediatric ICU (PICU)

    Job Summary

    The External Experienced RN Training Program (EETP) is a training program designed for experienced RNs who are looking to change or enhance their specialty practice. This program is open to external RNs who are not currently employed by UCSF Medical Center. The program begins July 8th, 2024.

    The application deadline is May 3rd, 2024 at 20:59 PM PDT.

    The program will be a combination of clinical preceptorship and didactic instruction. The subsequent time frame will consist of autonomous clinical rotations partnered with a buddy/resource RN.

    • Utilizes the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide safe, therapeutic care
    • Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary and nursing teams*Carries out established nursing procedures and performs related duties as required
    • Performs nursing care for patients with more complex needs with assistance and supervision
    • Assists with the management of patient care administered by other members of the nursing team

    Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

    For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

    Department Description

    The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 20-bed tertiary and quaternary medical/surgical intensive care unit that cares for critically ill neonates through adolescents. The majority of PICU patients arrive through our in-house, nurse-managed Transport Team and Access Center for care that can only be provided at UCSF Medical Center.

    These patients receive care for a variety of life-threatening medical and surgical conditions. Nurses on this unit learn the skills necessary to maintain vital functions for these fragile children, while supporting their families through difficult times.

    The PICU Registered Nurse will coordinate patient care in collaboration with physicians, PICU CNS, Respiratory Therapists, Child Life, Social Work, Nutrition and Discharge Case Managers.

    Required Qualifications

    • A minimum of two years recent RN inpatient pediatric acute care unit (Medical/Surgical, Transitional Care, Heme/Onc, BMT) experience or a minimum of two years recent inpatient adult ICU/TCU experience or a minimum of four years recent experience in adult Medical/Surgical
    • Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California
    • Active American Heart Association BLS certification
    • Active American Heart Association PALS certification required within six months of program start date
    • The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations
