Upper School English Teacher - Baltimore, United States - Roland Park Country School
![Default job background](https://contents.bebee.com/public/img/bg-user-ex-1.jpg)
Description
GENERAL SUMMARY:Roland Park Country School, a college preparatory school for girls, is dedicated to the intellectual and moral development of its students. We cultivate creativity, independence of thought, tenacity of purpose, self-discipline, and emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. We maintain high academic standards, uphold tradition, and promote innovation. We nurture a cooperative, resilient spirit within an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect. In a diverse, inclusive, and joyful community, Roland Park Country School strives to instill in its students a lifelong love of learning and the responsibility to look within and beyond themselves to contribute to and serve as stewards and leaders of their communities.
Roland Park Country School is seeking a full-time Upper School English Teacher for the school year. The individual in this role reports to Upper School Head. The ideal candidate possesses the ability to foster and nurture a learning environment that is engaging and accessible to a broad and diverse range of students as well as the ability to connect curriculum content to student experiences and cultural frames of reference. This creative classroom teacher should enjoy building a curriculum and working collaboratively with colleagues.
English teachers at RPCS commit to building connections with all students. They accept the responsibility of developing and maintaining relationships and vow to nurture them through an unending desire for greater understanding and two-way communication. The RPCS English Department commits to planning instruction that is relevant to the experiences of students today and in their futures while providing venues for difficult conversations that can impact their minds in large and visible ways. Teachers commit to hearing their voices and responding to their concerns, inquiries, and truths with honesty and open hearts. In that light, the English department commits, to the extent possible, to offering students an individualized learning experience. Teachers will impart specific and ready feedback that encourages questions and revisions, not just once, but until learning objectives are met. And finally, teachers commit to setting high standards while challenging themselves to find creative and novel ways to guide every student toward achievement.
The Upper School English program is designed to foster a student's growth and confidence as a thinker, reader, writer, and individual. In a supportive environment, students are asked to make connections between the issues and themes highlighted in literature to those found in their own worlds. Using fiction and non-fiction texts, as well as classic and modern writings, students strengthen their reading skills on a literal level. As critical thinking skills are emerging and maturing in this age group, they use strategies to uncover deeper meaning. Students discuss and write about their insights to hone expressive language abilities, both creatively and analytically.
