    Description:
    Chapman University invites applications for the position of Director, Institute for Interdisciplinary Brain and Behavioral Sciences, with its headquarters at the Rinker Health Science campus, in Irvine, CA. This is a tenured faculty position at the rank of Full Professor. Chapman University's Institute for Interdisciplinary Brain and Behavioral Sciences was founded in 2019. Since then, the Institute has leveraged significant investments in its physical and intellectual resources to emerge as an internationally respected center for investigating the science underlying free will, intentionality and consciousness. The Institute is now entering the next phase of growth, with the goal of becoming an internationally recognized interdisciplinary hub for researchers and specialists working at the intersections of psychology, psychiatry, neuroscience, neurobiology, philosophy (of mind), computation, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, information processing and other emerging areas of inquiry broadly related to the field of neuroscience. At the same time, the Institute is poised to bring together researchers from across Chapman University, at both the Rinker Health Science campus and the Orange campus, to become a catalyst for growth in neuroscience research in diverse areas such as pain, human performance, aging brain aging, cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease, developmental origins of mental health, and artificial intelligence, among others, while maintaining its presence in consciousness-related topics. The Director will bring outstanding academic credentials as a top level, internationally recognized scholar; a record of extra-mural, preferably federal sponsored research; administrative and budgetary aptitude; a capacity to foster interactions within the university, and with the international scientific community in the relevant domains of expertise; a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence; an ability to collaborate effectively with all internal stakeholders; and a proven understanding on how to shape, advance and implement a shared trans-collegiate strategic vision to build and expand upon the foundations of the Brain Institute. The Director will oversee the Institute's operations and effectively manage the Institute's resources and activities. As part of building a new vision for the institute, the Director will be expected to optimize the use of the extensive existing resources, mentor faculty, recruit and support new tenure track faculty members, and add necessary equipment and instrumentation. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
    • Continue to grow the Brain Institute and secure a reputation within the international scientific community as a hub for fostering research interactions among diverse groups leading to new insights into complex neuroscience-related questions.
    • Actively support and promote the research direction and scientific collaborations of current and future faculty at the Brain Institute.
    • Maintain a program of funded research.
    • Lead efforts to expand existing research support, including identifying new sources of funding to address complex problems aligned with the Brain Institute's current and future areas of research focus.
    • Allocate infrastructure and resources among Brain Institute support staff and research groups to sustain current and promote future innovation and excellence in consultation with university leadership.

    Qualifications:
    • Terminal academic doctorate (Ph.D. equivalent)
    • Tenurable at the rank of Full Professor.
    • Robust, active, externally funded research program, a distinguished publication record, and a history of external grant support within neuroscience and related fields.
    • Excellent written and oral communicator with a demonstrated skillset to both lead proposals and projects independently while also contributing to existing projects as a technical and task leader.
    • Evidence of academic or professional leadership, accompanied by the names of three leading scholars who can provide professional references.
    • Evidence of commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
