ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV.This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The C-AD Cryo Group operates the large Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) central liquid helium refrigeration and distribution plant for cooling of superconducting magnetic and superconducting radio-frequency units. The plant continuously re-processes and pumps 50,000 gallons of LHe through over 30 miles of insulated pipe and other cryogenic equipment. The C-AD Cryo Group also operates and maintains other satellite LHe and LN2 plants and distribution systems for superconducting component operation and testing. A sophisticated system of instrumentation, remote-controlled components, and data-acquisition and control software keep these cryogenic systems running and allows the cryo-group staff to reliably monitor and control operations.

The Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) Cryo Group has an opening for an experienced controls and instrumentation (C&I) engineer to manage the cryogenic instrumentation and controls group engineering staff and projects through the remainder of the RHIC program and through the construction and operation of the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). Using a mix of custom hardware and software, PLC-based control, and commercial off-the-shelf equipment, the group is responsible for designing, deploying, and maintaining controls and instrumentation systems used in the operation of the RHIC cryogenic LHe plant and other cryogenic systems supporting RHIC operations.The C-AD Cryo Group C&I Engineering Leader will also manage staff working in collaboration with the EIC project cryogenic system control and instrumentation team. The Cryo Group C&I Leader is responsible for staff mentoring, performance management, safety and training, as well as ensuring that staff is following BNL policies and procedures.Finally, the Cryo Group C&I Leader is responsible for ensuring the C&I engineering staff's work is generally well planned and in step with the work of the Cryo Group mechanical engineering staff, and the mechanical and C&I field and operations technicians. This position has a high level of interaction and visibility with the BNL scientific and engineering community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Manage the C-AD Cryo Group Controls and Instrumentation engineering staff including mentoring, performance management, safety and training, and compliance
• Provide control and instrumentation systems expertise and lead the planning, research and development of control and instrumentation architecture and distribution throughout the C-AD complex
• Perform and manage controls and instrumentation, and electrical engineering on widely distributed process plant systems including the development, debugging and deployment of PLC hardware and software.
• Work closely with the C&I technician manager, staff technicians and engineers on the installation, integration, and maintenance of equipment in the field
• Work closely with the Cryo Group Leader and Chief Engineer on overall Cryo Group planning and strategy, and on the development of project plans including schedules with needed resources and budgets
• Evaluate vendor capabilities, prepare job orders, requisitions, and cost estimates
• Prepare design reviews and presentations as required
• Review and approve LOTO and work planning and related ES&H aspects for the group.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Bachelor's Degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering or related field with a solid understanding of electrical systems related to high power pumps, valve control, and other industrial process equipment
• Minimum 10 years of full-time relevant experience performing and managing controls and instrumentation, and electrical engineering on widely distributed process plant systems including the development, debugging and deployment of PLC hardware and software
• Strong organizational, interpersonal and leadership skills and demonstrated experience hiring, mentoring, supervising, and developing C&I or electrical engineering talent
• Demonstrated experience coordinating the work of multidisciplinary teams, including members of various trades, towards project scope, cost, and schedule goals
• Experience integrating Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) software for Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) development, SCADA systems, and embedded instrumentation and control applications in a process plant environment
• Proven track record of successfully deployed control systems including distributed I/O to multiple locations throughout the campus
• Proficient computer skills including the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project scheduling programs)
• Clear and concise written, verbal and presentation skills
• Experience with work planning, conduct of operations, and plant safety best practices

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Master's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering or related field with a solid understanding of electrical systems related to high power pumps, valve control, and other industrial process equipment
• Extensive experience with control systems related to large pressurized fluid process systems such as our cryogenic system, steam plants for power generation or ship propulsion, or chemical processing plants
• Practical working knowledge of controls and instrumentation for cryogenic equipment and liquid helium processing, and experience troubleshooting and maintaining cryogenic C&I equipment and systems
• Demonstrated experience developing and deploying networking interfaces to field equipment using ethernet, RS232, RS485, or other communication protocols
• Experience with AC power systems and components, compliance with electrical safety standards such as NFPA 70, and UL 508A, and implementing LOTO to protect electrical workers
• Demonstrated experience with Aveva Edge Web Studio

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

• Individual may be required to climb ladders and/or work in Confined Spaces
• Individual may be required to work in Oxygen Deficiency Hazard area
• Individual may be required to work in High Noise environment
• Individual may be required to work in Static Magnetic fields area greater than 5 Gauss
• Individual will be required to become a qualified Radiation Worker and may be required to work in Radiation areas
• Individual may be required to occasionally work off-hours, nights or weekends to support mission critical projects

• Individual may be required to travel (international/domestic) to attend vendor meetings, project reviews, and conferences, and training
• This is a fully onsite position located at BNL
• Valid driver's license required

Compensation:

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $ $187600 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
