Youth Development Specialist

Summer 2024 (part-time seasonal)

  • Must be available from June 24 through August 23 (off on July 4 & 5, August 9 & 12)
  • No weekends
  • Work schedule: Monday through Thursday 12:00 Noon to 5:00 PM, Friday 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM
  • Payrate: $17/hour
  • Specific clubhouse location depends on which program area you can specialize in (arts, gym, recreation, STEM, etc.)
Youth Development Specialists plan and lead activities in a specific content area, such as:

  • Arts (could be arts & crafts, visual arts, performing arts, digital arts, language arts, etc.)
  • Sports & Games (indoor gym activities)
  • Social Recreation (gamesroom contests, indoor group games, instruction, etc.)
  • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math)
  • Outdoor Recreation: using onsite outdoor spaces for games and activities
Children are elementary-school-age (1st through 6th grade). The adult-to-child ratio is 1:12. Youth Development Specialists must have verifiable experience in planning and conducting age-appropriate activities in their specific content area. Applicants are also welcome to propose ideas for other content areas for which they are qualified to lead activities.


Youth Development Specialists work 12:00 to 5:15 PM Monday through Thursday, and on Fridays from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, or approximately 30 hours per week.

The summer staff schedule starts June 24 and runs through August 23, including pre-program training. There is also the opportunity to work August 26-30 if available. The program is closed on July 4 and 5, and August 9 and 12. There may also be an opportunity to continue working during the school year if mutually agreeable.


Qualifications

  • At least one year of youthrelated work experience with schoolage children in a group setting (required), in an urban, diverse setting (preferred).
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • At least one year of college credits earned (required). Ideal for Education, Arts or Recreation majors or those in related fields.
  • Age 18 or older (required per state Child Care regulations).
  • Current First Aid & CPR certification required (can be earned during preprogram training).
  • Successful experience working with diverse populations preferred (for example: English Language Learners and students in Special Education programs).
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate positively with children of ages 61
  • Ability to follow policies and procedures of organization, in behavior management, safety and security, emergency procedures, etc.
  • Ability to successfully pass all background checks if a conditional offer of employment is made, including but not limited to: national, state, and local background checks (fingerprintbased); continuous criminal records monitoring during the course of employment; RI D.C.Y.F. and relevant outofstate child abuse registry clearance(s), employment and education verifications; reference checks; preemployment drug test (for illegal drugs).
