    The Position

    ***AUHSD is Recruiting for Substitute Bus Drivers***

    Applicants must possess and show proof of the following licenses & certifications at time of application in order to be invited to the testing portion of this recruitment.

    Possession of an unrestricted, valid California Class A or B commercial driver's license with passenger and air brake endorsements. Valid unrestricted California Special Driver Certificate for school bus operation or transit school bus with automatic transmission. Current California Highway Patrol approved First Aid Certificate.

    BASIC FUNCTION

    Under the direction of the Director of Transportation, operate and maintain school buses to transport regular education and special education students safely and efficiently to an assigned location using a designated route; perform regular safety inspections; prepare a variety of records and reports related to assigned activities.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    EDUCATION:

    Graduation from high school.

    EXPERIENCE:

    Sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed below.

    LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

    Valid California Class A or B commercial driver's license with passenger and air brake endorsements. Valid unrestricted California Special Driver Certificate for school bus operation or transit school bus with automatic transmission.

    Current California Highway Patrol approved First Aid Certificate.

    Must be, and remain, insurable under the District's vehicle driver's insurance policy at the standard rate.

    Clean driving record at time of employment; Applicants for this classification will be required to obtain and submit, at his/her own expense, his/her current motor vehicle driving record (DMV K-4 printout) at the time of appointment. The record must meet and be maintained at the District's safe driving standard.

    Failure to meet any requirements will result in the disqualification of the applicant regardless of any other standing.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    Employees in this classification stand, sit, walk, lift and carry up to 50 lbs or more with assistance, carry stoop, bend repeatedly, use fingers, wrists or hands repetitively, use both hands and legs simultaneously, push, pull, maintain balance, stoop/bend, kneel, reach over head, have rapid mental/muscular coordination, speak clearly, hear normal voice conversation, have depth perception, have color vision/distinguish shades, see small details and for long distances, operate mobile motorized equipment, drive a vehicle and use a two-way radio.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    Employees in this classification work outside and inside, in changing temperatures to over 90°. May be exposed to severe contagious illnesses/diseases, heights, loud noises, fumes, dust, chemicals, odors or toxic materials, and electrical hazards. Employees work in direct contact with the public, students, and other District staff without guidance from supervisor; some assignments may require use of restraint procedures due to the nature and severity of the disabilities and/or assaultive or self abusive tendencies of pupils, may complete routes within tight deadlines and continuously changing priorities and interruptions; may work with moving vehicles and motorized wheelchair lifts and equipment.
    Examples of Duties

    SPECIALIZED ESSENTIAL DUTIES (Typically only performed in this classification):

    • Drives a school bus along a designated route; Picks up and discharge regular education and special education students in accordance with time schedules.

    • Stops traffic and escorts students across streets as necessary.

    • Observes legal and defensive driving practices; Assures compliance with applicable traffic and student transportation laws, codes and regulations; Maintains order and discipline among passengers on the bus and while waiting at bus stops in accordance with District policies related to disciplining students.

    • Prepares related logs and reports as necessary;

    • Transports students, faculty and parents on field trips or other events; Meets scheduled departure and arrival times as assigned.

    • Assists handicapped students to board, sit in and leave the bus safely; Assists students in wheelchairs by loading and securing chairs before departure and assuring students are safely fastened into their seats; Utilizes wheelchair lifts and tie-downs.

    • Conducts required daily safety inspections of buses, inspecting the interior, exterior and engine of the vehicles; Checks fluid levels; Reports major mechanical malfunctions or other problems as required; Maintains related records;

    • Maintains bus in a clean and safe operating condition; Washes, sweeps and cleans buses;

    • Refuels, services and prepares vehicle for operation; Maintains mileage, load and time records as required; Orders parts in accordance with established guidelines;

    • Determines appropriate action in potential or real medical emergency situations according to established guidelines; Administers first aid to passengers as needed.

    • Utilizes two-way radios for bus to bus and bus to base communications.

    • Attends safety meetings and driver education and safety programs as directed;

    GENERAL ESSENTIAL DUTIES (Also performed in other classifications):

    • Participates in a variety of extra duty assignments at the yard as necessary; inform dispatcher of routes in need of updating or revising as necessary.

    • Performs related duties as assigned.

    Recruitment Information

    RECRUITMENT TYPE: OPEN - Anyone may apply

    CERTIFICATION TYPE: SUBSTITUTE - Qualified candidates, or Eligibles, who pass all testing stages will be placed on one eligibility list. Eligibles will be contacted in rank order to be processed as a substitute employee by Human Resources.

    APPLICATION PROCESS

    SCREENING PROCESS

    The screening process for this position, which may be subject to modification, will include some form of a(n): application screening, initial qualifications screening, documentation/certification screening, and supplemental application screening. The stated qualifications for the position represent only the minimum requirements and do not guarantee qualification for examination or placement on an eligibility list.

    EXAMINATION PROCESS

    The examination may consist of any combination of a(n): training and experience (T&E) evaluation, written knowledge test, hands on/performance test, structured panel interview, situational judgement interview, or other type of exam of fitness for duty. All parts of the examination process are job related. A passing score must be attained on each portion of the exam to advance to the next stage and ultimate placement on an eligibility list.

    DISABILITY ACCOMMODATION

    Requests for reasonable accommodations for the testing process must be made no less than two (2) days prior to the examination. Requests must be signed by your medical doctor, school psychologist, or learning consultant as appropriate and must be on provider letterhead and contain an actual signature.

    EXAM PROTESTS

    Protest of any part of the exam process must be in writing and submitted to the Personnel Director no later than five (5) working days from the date you participated in the exam. Any protest must include rationale to support the protest and shall include supporting documentation or references. Protests must be based on illegal discrimination, abuse of discretion, or procedure/process error. Protests should NOT be based on receiving unexpected results. We cannot be responsible for lost mail, misdirected mail, or failure of mail to be delivered after it has been entrusted to the U.S. Postal Service.

    ESTABLISHMENT OF ELIGIBILITY

    Candidates who are successful in all screening and testing stages will be placed on an eligibility list. Typically, an eligibility list for a classification expires after six (6) months or one (1) year. Candidates on the expired eligibility list are no longer considered for positions within the class. Eligibility lists may be extended beyond one year or expire sooner than one year. Eligibility lists may be merged, in which case candidate ranks may change.

    SELECTION PROCESS

    Candidates on the eligibility list will be called in rank order to participate in final selection interviews with the hiring manager until three ranks of candidates have accepted the invitation to interview. Ranks may include ties so more than three candidates may be called to interview for one vacancy. Please note that candidates will be removed from the eligibility list for declining the invitation to interview more than three (3) times.

    OFFERS OF EMPLOYMENT

    Official offers of employment are ONLY made by the Anaheim Union High School District Human Resources, Classified Office. Offers are subject to satisfactory completion of ALL the pre-employment processing including: successful completion of a physical examination, tuberculosis examination, fingerprint clearance by the California Department of Justice, and proof of eligibility to work in the United States.

    ADVANCED STEP PLACEMENT

    All new regular classified employees shall be paid in accordance with the salary range established for the class to which assigned. Initial placement will normally be the first step of the salary range. However, a new employee may receive advanced step placement with an approval from Human Resources. Requests for advanced step must be submitted in writing to the Human Resources office before the employee's first day of work. Approval will be based on the following criteria:

    A) Additional qualifying experience beyond that required for entry into the class.

    B) Additional education at the college level when related to the position, beyond the established educational requirements for entry into the class.

    C) Evidence of currently receiving a salary greater than the first step of the salary for the classification.

    BENEFITS

    Benefits earned by all permanent classified employees:

    -Leaves: Sick leave, holidays, bereavement and emergency leaves.

    -Retirement: Classified employees are members of the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). Employee contribution is 8% of gross earnings.

    Benefits earned by all permanent classified employees working 20 hours or more per week:

    -Insurance: The District provides medical, dental, vision care, behavioral health and life insurance for the employees and their dependents.
