Director, Business Development - Enabling Technologies Search and Evaluation Job


The Search and Evaluation (S&E) team is a core function within our Company's Global Business Development & Licensing (BD&L) organization that is focused on identifying and evaluating external partnering opportunities that are aligned with our Company's Research & Development and Business Development & Licensing (BD&L) strategies.


The Search and Evaluation (S&E) team interacts with biotechnology and biopharmaceutical companies, academic institutions, venture firms, and other key stakeholders in the life sciences industry, to explore potential opportunities to collaborate, license, or acquire various enabling technologies of high strategic value across the discovery and development spectrum.

The S&E function is responsible for leading scientific and technical due diligence to ensure an in-depth understanding of the underlying science behind each opportunity.


The Director, Business Development & Licensing - Enabling Technologies Search and Evaluation will be a key contributor to our Company'' s efforts in worldwide search & evaluation, due diligence, and execution of business development opportunities in enabling technology areas complementing and/or expanding our Company' 's current core capabilities.


This individual will support discovery biologics and vaccines as well as other discovery and development focused areas with the expectation that their responsibility will expand to other functional areas as they become proficient in the job role.

This individual may also support precision medicine needs including new biomarker technologies, digital pathology, antibiotic diagnostics, and our companion diagnostic needs in oncology and other therapeutic areas.


Key Responsibilities Include:


  • Identify, evaluate, and execute business development opportunities with a focus on cuttingedge science across different functional areas including discovery biologics and vaccines to enhance and/or expand our Company's pipeline.
  • Contribute to the formulation of licensing strategy with functional area leadership.
  • Proactively identify and solve complex problems that impact the direction of the business.
  • Contribute to the business development strategy within pharmacology, vaccines, and biologics in conjunction with functional area and clinical development leadership.
  • Contribute to the business development strategy within biomarker discovery, clinical trial needs and Companion Diagnostic/Diagnostic programs in conjunction with functional and clinical development leadership.
  • Work closely with search and evaluation colleagues in our Company' s business development External Innovation Hubs to ensure comprehensive worldwide coverage of the relevant opportunity space.
  • Collaborate with functional areas, including discovery, preclinical, clinical, and commercial teams, as well as commercial business development colleagues to ensure alignment between activities and business development needs relating to the functional area needs.
  • Analyze the full range of data and lead crossfunctional due diligences on inbound and outbound licensing and business development opportunities (from discovery through filing).
  • Provide thorough and timely assessments and updates to appropriate management levels to ensure efficient communication and seamless cross functional collaboration.
  • Work closely with transaction leads, legal, commercial, and financial analysis teams to ensure relevant deals of highest priority are being advanced and executed timely.
  • Manage a portfolio of complex business development projects serving as the primary scientific contact for potential licensing, acquisition, collaborations, codevelopment agreements, and strategic alliances in support of the relevant opportunity space.
  • Serve as a spokesperson for our Company by communicating the licensing strategy both internally and externally, and present on behalf of our Company at industry networking events, scientific conferences, and other venues.

  • This role is based at our Headquarters site in Rahway, NJ (USA), with a Hybrid setup (combination of an inoffice & remote).

Education Minimum Requirement:


  • MD or PhD in relevant scientific discipline or PharmD with 3 plus years postdoctoral experience

Required Experience and Skills:


  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in the biopharma industry with a strong understanding of the drug discovery and development process and broad knowledge of the biotech and healthcare sector.
  • Preferred experience in identifying, evaluating, and executing business development deals and partnerships that have resulted in substantial impact.
