    has been a bedrock of the Harlem community since 1887. The hospital provides a wide range of medical, surgical, diagnostic, therapeutic and family support services to the residents of Central Harlem, West Harlem, Washington Heights and Inwood. Harlem is the largest hospital in the area, capable of treating the most seriously ill. Harlem provides over 90 specialized ambulatory care services, dentistry and oral surgery, behavioral health services, and community substance abuse treatment.

    Duties & Responsibilities

    Entry-level laboratory position providing support to the Accessioning department (which includes specimen archiving). Primary responsibilities include checking patient specimens into the archival storage system, organization and maintenance of slide storage room and archive freezers, and fulfilling specimen returns and checkout requests.

    SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs patient data entry and retrieval using automated or manual systems and file reports.
  • Sort-out specimens with appropriate labeling and identification for distribution to designated areas for testing.
  • Receives specimens into the LIS
  • Prepares specimens to send out to referral labs
  • Answering the phone
  • Provides customer service
  • Process specimens for testing (i.e., centrifuge, decant, etc.)
  • Delivers laboratory results/specimens as assigned.
  • Delivers, maintains inventory of laboratory supplies as assigned.
  • Prepares laboratory reagents as instructed.
  • Cleans and maintains equipment as instructed.
  • Attends and participates continuing and in-service education programs.
  • Maintain strict patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Work as a team player during all assignments.
  • Any other assignments made by managers/supervisors.

    • Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from a Senior High School or High School Equivalency Diploma and one year of experience in a laboratory environment performing related work as described in position; or,
  • Satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
