    Description

    Job Title: Health & Nutrition Manager

    Organization: Kai Ming, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that provides free full-day full-year; full-day part-year; or part-day part-year Head Start preschool services to eligible children ages 3-5 years old in San Francisco, CA with funding from Head Start, the California Department of Education, First 5 San Francisco and San Francisco Office of Early Care & Education.

    Job: This is a full-time exempt position. Under the general supervision of the Director of Children and Family Services, the Health & Nutrition Manager plans, participates and coordinates the Head Start health and nutritional services program; coordinates assigned activities with other Head Start service areas and with outside agencies; and provides highly responsible and complex administrative support ensuring integration of the Health and Nutrition program with other service areas.

    Reports to: Director of Children and Family Services

    Essential Duties:

    Health
    • Oversee the completion of the child health requirements and other required screenings and assessments.
    • Supervise the review of medical and developmental history of each child.
    • Review, evaluate and interpret health records, vital statistics and other data affecting health and nutrition, in order to assess needs and to plan and implement special programs or activities to meet these needs.
    • Lead the effort in encouraging parents to adhere to medical, dental, screenings, and ensure follow-up treatments are completed within established federal guidelines.
    • Organize and participate in team management functions of planning, implementing and evaluating family health goals and objectives.
    • Oversee program components that include partnerships with nursing programs in developing health plan and training staff on how to better care for children with medical needs in the program.
    • Monitor, guide and provide support to staff and families who work with children with re-occurring medical concerns.
    • Develop partnerships with local agencies to assist families to linkup with health related services in the local community.
    • Oversee the process of completion of the child health screenings, other required screenings and assessments and is be familiar with referral requirements while helping fine tune referral systems. Assist in recruiting prospective families and assist with enrollment process through coordinating and facilitating process for children with health, nutrition and disabilities concerns.
    • Coordinate implementation of health and individual treatment plans. May provide parent consultation, and coordinate care between parent/staff/physician.
    • Conduct and document follow-up on all referrals to ensure that needs of the child are met.
    • While respecting family confidentiality, regularly share information with teachers to ensure coordinated services that meet the needs of individual children and families.
    • Develop a working knowledge of community resources, and visit, at least annually, with major agencies for service delivery updates and community resource guide updates.
    • Interpret and implement federal performance standards. Participate in the development and revisions to the Parent & Staff Health Handbook including areas of health, safety and nutrition.
    • Attend parent/teacher conferences as requested.
    • Oversee ChildPlus database to assure the integrity and compliance of health & nutrition record.
    • Document all efforts to assist families, tracks family partnership efforts and outcomes, records, monitor and follows up on referral, and submits reports as required.
    • Maintain strict confidentiality at all times, including the ability to recognize situations in which confidentiality is required.
    Nutrition
    • Supervise and coordinate the development and updating on an annual basis, the Head Start Nutrition Services plan in conformance with the Head Start Performance Standards.
    • Write the nutrition service plan for Head Start in consultation with staff, parents and community partners. Review nutrition services plan annually and update as needed.
    • Arrange for the collection of data as needed to ensure compliance with pertinent legislation, regulations, and laws; that food service reimbursement requests are accurate, timely and assure maximum return; ensure timely and accurate reporting of data to Federal and State authorities.
    • Provide direction for menu formulation, food preparation and service, purchasing, sanitation standards, safety practices and personnel utilization, in accordance with California Food Service, Health Department and Head Start guidelines.
    • Provide input into the development of the annual food services budget for inclusion in the agencys annual funding plan.
    • Work with the agencys food vendor to plan menu cycles of nutritional value for meals and snacks.
    • Provide input into the development of schedules, standards, and procedures for preparing and delivering meals to sites as required.
    • Counsel parents concerning general nutritional problems and design and conduct nutrition education for parents.
    • Conduct in-service training for center staff concerning nutrition education, and its impact on health.
    • Identify and mobilize local community agencies that can provide nutrition education/services to parents and programs staff.
    • Conduct monthly health and sanitation inspections for all Head Start classrooms.
    • Conduct periodic observations of nutrition education in the classroom and provide direction for improving the classroom nutrition education program.
    • Review and evaluate Nutrition Services component activities to insure conformance to Head Start Performance Standards and other State and local regulations.
    • Interpret nutrition standards to staff.
    • Assess any assigned nutrition personnel and make appropriate duty assignments.
    • May purchase food and supplies for snacks.
    Related Activities
    • Meet regularly with the Director of Children and Family Services and other service area managers; attend IEP meetings, as needed. Participate in a variety of meetings, activities, and events to support Head Start and its partners; attend and participate in professional group meetings and trainings.
    • Develop and implement a process of on-going monitoring, including regular and frequent site visits.
    • Prepare in-service training plans for educational staff, family services team, and parent groups related to health and nutrition.
    • Participate in the Head Start Health Advisory Board meeting activities.
    • Perform other related essential functions, as assigned.
    Qualifications

    Qualifications: Kai Ming is looking for an experienced, qualified professional who will have the functional responsibility for the Head Start Nutritional Component Program. Member or eligible for membership, in the American Dietetic Association. Knowledge of dietetics or nutrition in a community-based setting; nutritional resources and programs. Principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation. Knowledge of computers and information management systems; budget preparation and control. Ability to communicate nutritional health related information in a manner easily understood by parents; work with diverse community, student, and staff groups.
    • Bachelor's Degree (BA) from a four-year college or university in food and nutrition or dietetics as a minimum;
    • At least five (5) years' of progressively responsible experience in health and nutritional services. Formal training in the area of nutrition is required.
    • A R.N. (Registered Nurse) license preferred.
    • Knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards required.
    • Bilingual (Chinese/English) preferred.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and online reporting database operation.
    • Excellent problem solving, programming and organizational skills.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills.
    • Must have the ability to communicate with various stakeholders; parents, children, consultants, colleagues and delegates from partner agencies.
    • Must be able to conduct staff training, maintain records, prepare reports, and clearly understand written or verbal instruction.
    • Ability to organize, manage and control work flow.
    • Ability to work effectively with individuals from various ethnic, socioeconomic, educational and cultural backgrounds.
    • Ability to identify, assimilate, comprehend, and solve critical elements of various situations (initiate solutions without constant supervision)
    • Must be comfortable with public speaking.
    • Ability to travel for meetings, conferences, and trainings.
    • Adhere to the Kai Ming Code of Conduct and all other internal policies and procedures.
    • Accountable for the health, safety and supervision of all children and families.
