Surface engineering has always served sustainability. By adapting the surface to an application, resources and energy can be saved and sustainable products can be produced. The
Institute of Surface Engineering (IOT) focuses on research and development in joining and surface engineering. The processes of thermal spraying, physical vapor deposition (PVD), welding, brazing, and soldering are used. Our dedicated and open-minded team addresses current environmental and resource conservation issues. As key technologies for solving these challenges, industrially relevant surface and joining processes are used in a practical manner.

The research group
Thermal Spraying - Process Technology (TS-P) is working on the further development of the coating process. This involves using simulations, machine learning, and modern process diagnostics to analyze and monitor thermal spraying processes.

In addition, new coating systems with functions beyond traditional wear and corrosion protection layers, such as heating layers, are being developed.

Current research focuses on increasing
ecology and
cost-effectiveness of plasma spraying. This is achieved through precise process diagnostics and resulting changes. The process is analyzed using a high-speed camera and the results are used to
