    Position Summary:


    The Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Services (SAES) is a forward-thinking student success operation committed to its role as the leading custodial unit guiding the student experience at the University of Northern Colorado (UNC).

    Staff members within the Division are expected to positively contribute to our mission of supporting students in the co-curricular environment and provide an experience that inspires students academically, intellectually, personally, and emotionally.


    The Director of Training and Staff Psychologist is responsible for primary oversight of the training programs at UNC's IACS-accredited Counseling Center.

    Oversight of programs includes an APA-accredited doctoral internship in health service psychology, masters internship, advanced practicum training for doctoral and master's students, as well as administrative support and training for staff involved in the provision of supervision and training.

    The Director of Training, Staff Psychologist ensures efficient and high-quality delivery of services; oversees data collection and evaluation of training services; and coordinates training programs in accordance with guidelines and accreditation standards of the American Psychological Association (APA) as well as the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) Internship Matching Program.

    The Director of Training, Staff Psychologist reviews and develops policies and procedures for implementation; facilitates internal evaluation of services, trainee metrics and outcomes; and manages recruitment for training programs.

    This position is part of the Counseling Center leadership team, with collaborative responsibility for providing vision, coordination, and leadership around clinical service delivery, training programs, and policies and procedures.

    This position is part of a clinical team committed to reducing health disparities and supporting the health and well-being of students from marginalized identities.

    The Director of Training provides direct administrative supervision to assigned staff therapists on the center training team and facilitates regular training team meetings.

    The Director of Training also provides direct psychological services to support a multiculturally rich and diverse student body.

    This position may require some evening hours and occasional weekend duties, particularly during peak periods related to trainee recruitment and selection processes, though also in response to campus crises and outreach-related requests.

    The Director of Training must also work collaboratively with the broader campus community for matters related to training, committee responsibilities, and shared mission alignment, such as university-wide Rowing, Not Drifting 2030 initiatives.


    Job Duties:


    40% Training program administration: In collaboration with the Executive Director, the Director of Training provides vision, coordination, and leadership for Counseling Center training programs as a whole (i.e., APA-accredited doctoral internship in health service psychology, master's internship, advanced practicum training for doctoral and master's students, as well as administrative support and training for staff involved in the provision of supervision and training).

    Training program administration is done in collaboration and with respect to ensuring compliance with APA-accreditation requirements and APPIC standards.

    Program administration is also conducted in collaboration with the Counseling Center leadership team and with respect to balancing center clinical service delivery needs, changes in center policies and procedures, needs of campus community stakeholders, and shifts in state and national legislation.

    Coordinates the annual search, recruitment, interview and orientation process for doctoral and master's level interns as well as advanced practicum students.

    Coordinates and facilitates training/orientation schedules for all trainees at the center as well as onboarding and administrative support for staff who will be involved in aspects of the center training team.

    Maintains the internship training manuals, website, and trainee records. Obtains and compiles routine performance-related evaluation of trainees, in accordance with accreditation standards.

    Uses competency grounded and behaviorally anchored evaluation processes as a basis for fair assessment of trainee progress and response to trainee-related skill deficits, including the generation of formal and informal remediation plans as well as possible gatekeeping functions of dismissal from the training program in accordance with due process procedures, if indicated.

    Regularly communicates with trainee home institutions regarding progress, and particularly in the case of identified trainee skill deficits/problematic behaviors. Oversees, schedules, coordinates, and facilitates the 1.5 hour per week professional development seminars in collaboration with other staff. Facilitates the Supervision of Supervision seminar for the interns, which involves direct training in intern supervision competency.

    Facilitates regular training team meetings as a forum for communicating timely training-related policy and procedural shifts and other pertinent updates, for providing consultation and support to members of the training team, for proactively addressing and responding to challenges related to individual trainees and/or training cohorts, as well as encouraging ongoing professional development in areas related to supervisory and organizational/systemic competence.

    Assists with maintaining APA Accreditation, including completing annual reports and self-study reaccreditation process, routinely collecting and compiling necessary data and information to ensure compliance as well as with consideration to ongoing process improvements.

    40% Direct counseling services: Maintains consistent caseload of student and employee clients. Conducts initial assessments and triage care.

    This position provides crisis and on-going clinical and psychological services for students and EAP clients dealing with stressful and/or emotional issues, falling broadly under mental health needs.

    This professional provides clinical assistance to individual students, couples, and therapy and didactic groups.

    Supervises doctoral interns, externs, and/or unlicensed staff members in their provision of psychological services, in professional development, and in support of the Counseling Center training program.

    This position is responsible for consultation and outreach services to students, campus, and community members related to mental health issues and student concerns.

    This position is responsible for maintaining timely and thorough documentation of activities, maintains knowledge of ethical and legal standards of care, provides all services in keeping with these standards, and obtains appropriate continuing education to maintain license and develop professional skills.

    20% Center Administration/Broader Campus Work/Other Duties as Assigned.

    The Director of Training assumes regular delegated functions from the Executive Director pertaining to internal management of the Counseling Center and executes other duties as assigned.

    Consults and collaborates with the Executive Director and leadership team to develop and manage center goals, processes, funding priorities, and staff team-building.

    Administratively supervises all staff and serves as Director when the role of acting Executive Director is delegated or when the Executive Director is unavailable.

    Adheres to agency and legal/ethical standards regarding case management and documentation. Participates in weekly case conference. Provides administrative oversight and engages in staff diversity discussion hours and ongoing diversity, equity & inclusion/anti-oppressive initiatives.


    Minimum Qualifications:

    • An earned doctorate in Counseling Psychology or Clinical Psychology; from an APA-accredited program. Candidate must have completed an APA-Accredited predoctoral internship in psychology.
    • 3 or more years of experience providing clinical services to individuals with significant mental health, substance abuse, or co-occurring needs.
    • 3 or more years providing clinical supervision.
    • One to two years' of experience with progressively complex administrative/managerial responsibilities in a cohesive and interdisciplinary team.
    • Licensed or License Eligible as a Psychologist in the State of Colorado. If unlicensed in Colorado at the time of hire, must obtain license within 3-6 months of hire. License must be maintained as a condition of continued employment.
    • Strong skills providing effective clinical and administrative supervision.
    • Ability to engage in program assessment and evaluation and adapt programming to meet the needs of the UNC community.
    • Evidence of outstanding and culturally competent clinical skills and a well-integrated understanding of brief treatment, crisis intervention, high risk and high acuity populations, and outreach/developmental programming.
    • Strong leadership skills.
    • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
    • Proficiency in word processing, e-mail, presentation, and spreadsheet software and ability to use medical records software (prefer Titanium).
    • Demonstrated ability to collaborate, communicate, and interact with individuals and groups while appreciating the unique contribution of individuals from varied backgrounds.
    • Knowledge and experience in working with individuals who are Black/African American/African Diaspora; Native American/American Indian/Indigenous; Asian American; Latino/Latina/Latinx/Latine; immigrants and/or international students.
    • Working proficiency with LGBTQIA+ issues and concerns, trans-inclusive care, as well as various other intersecting identity markers of students, trainees, and staff.
    • Extensive knowledge of evidence-based clinical services, diagnosis, and procedures in individual, couples, and group settings; ability to assess, manage, provide, and ensure high quality clinical service provision, including expert knowledge and experience with crisis management, hospitalization, and legal and ethical decision-making.
    • Knowledge of assessment & research methods and activities including assessment of student learning outcomes/satisfaction metrics, development and implementation of systems to improve service delivery, and ability to prepare data reports and engage in data-driven decision making.
    • Ability to share knowledge in accessible and applicable ways to teammates and the campus community.
    Preferred Qualifications


    • Experience providing supervision to clinicians who are in earlier stages of professional development.
    • Experience with program/curriculum development.
    • Prior training and employment in the context of an APA-accredited training program in a college or university counseling center environment.
    • Experience related to supporting or managing a training program
    • Specialized training and/or clinical expertise applicable to the university counseling environment
