    The Department of Public Works & Transportation (DPW&T) is currently seeking a highly qualified individual to fill a vacant Transit Driver (Non-CDL) (Transit Operator - G) position, Grade A20 within its Senior Transport Services Division.

    About the Position:
    Bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply. This is entry level skilled craft position whereby the incumbent operates non- commercial passenger vehicles and ancillary equipment (wheelchair lift, two-way radio) for the purpose of transporting customers with special needs (senior citizens, person with disabilities) to assigned destinations. Para-transit routes are primarily followed; however fixed routes may be assigned if necessary. The incumbent is evaluated based on the safe and efficient operation of vehicles as relates to the transport of passengers and the quality of services provided to customers. Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions with exposure to the elements. Incumbent must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50lbs on a regular basis and must wear and maintain a uniform and\safety equipment. Work is performed under the supervision of a Transit Service Coordinator (TSC) within well-establishedpolicies, procedures and guidelines.
    Examples of Work

    What You'll Do:
    • Safely operates non-CDL vehicles in passenger service for Call-a-Bus and/or PGC Link while adhering to department policies and federal, local, and state laws;
    • Utilizes mobile transit technology to follow schedule and notify passengers of trip progression;
    • Maintains communication by radio with Dispatch and Transit Service Coordinators to report service interruptions;
    • Greet passengers and provide general customer service by responding to inquiries and providing general transit information;
    • Assist passengers boarding/disembarking with wheelchairs or other mobility aids to include their proper securement;
    • Ensures cleanliness of vehicle exterior/interior and fuels vehicle after each shift;
    • Conducts routine inspections of assigned vehicle before/after use according to safety and operating procedures and reports any defects accordingly;
    • Participate as an Essential employee in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program and other emergency or special activities; and
    • Perform other tasks and duties assigned, which may not be specifically listed in the position description; however, are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work.
    Qualifications

    What You'll Need:
    • Graduation from high school or a GED equivalency, and
    • One (1) year of professional driving experience with direct customer service experience (ie. Ride share, delivery driver, chauffeur, etc.); or an equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledges, skills and abilities.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Upon selection, the candidate must:
    • Possess, maintain, and submit a copy of Class "C" Driver's License
    • Submit a current Motor Vehicle Administration driving record;
    • Possess closed-toe shoes that meet safety requirement for vehicle operations;
    • Pass a thorough physical examination;
    • Pass an alcohol and drug test;
    • Be willing to work outdoors in various weather conditions; and
    • Participate as an "Essential" employee in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program and other emergency, or special activities as assigned.
    DURATION OF ELIGIBILITY: Candidates will be selected from a temporary register of eligible candidates, which will become effective approximately four (4) weeks after the closing date. Once a selection has been made, the register will expire.

    General Plan Information:

    The Prince George's County benefits plan year is from January 1 to December 31.

    A spouse (to include a same sex spouse) can be added to the health benefit plans. A marriage certificate and social security number is required to add a spouse.

    Children under the age of 26 are eligible for coverage under the health benefit plans. This includes stepchildren and children of the same-sex spouse. A birth certificate(s) and social security number(s) is required to add a child(ren). If you are only adding the stepchildren or child(ren) of a same-sex spouse, you will need to submit a marriage certificate. You will also need to submit the birth certificate of the child(ren) and your spouse must be listed as a parent.

    The premiums for health benefits are deducted on a pre-tax basis with the exception of Long-Term Disability, Extra Life Insurance and Voluntary Benefits (Short-Term Disability, Whole Life Insurance, Critical Illness, Accident Insurance, Cancer Indemnity, Hospital Indemnity Protection, Accident Indemnity Plan, Supplemental Dental and Group Legal Services).

    New employees must enroll in the County's health benefit plans within thirty (30) days of the hire date.

    The effective date of the health benefits coverage is the beginning of the month following a waiting period of forty-five (45) days from the date of hire.

    After enrolling in the County's benefit plans, employees may only make changes to the plans either during the open enrollment period, which occurs annually (usually each October), and/or during the year, due to a family status change (i.e., marriage, births, divorce and adoption).
