    The Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington (SPH-B) invites applications for a mid-to-senior level tenure-track faculty position, eligible for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, to serve within the exercise science program and faculty group in the Department of Kinesiology.

    The SPH-B seeks individuals passionate about our mission to promote health for all members of society through rigorous and impactful research, excellence in teaching and mentoring, and service to the university, profession, and the community.

    This 10‐month appointment would ideally start August 1, 2024, although an earlier or later start date is negotiable.

    Overview:

    The SPH-B is located on the flagship campus of Indiana University and is comprised of over 200 faculty across five departments.

    The Department of Kinesiology recently celebrated its 75th Anniversary and has consistently been highly ranked by the National Academy of Kinesiology.

    The Kinesiology faculty, (~50% NTT faculty), is a talented, productive, and collegial team, united by a shared interest in creating and translating knowledge in human movement science and practice, and sport marketing and management.

    Our exercise science faculty conduct research within the areas of exercise physiology (basic and applied/clinical), neuromotor control and biomechanics, athletic training, and physical activity behavior.

    With Kinesiology being one of the largest departments at Indiana University, our faculty educate, mentor, and serve ~2,000 students enrolled in our BS, MS, and PhD degree programs.

    The Department of Kinesiology maintains strong connections to other departments in the SPH-B and other schools across Indiana University.

    The School of Public Health-Bloomington (SPH-B) is located in the heart of the IUB campus and is comprised of five collaborative academic departments with over 200 faculty and staff, including one of the most diverse faculties of any school of public health in the nation, with 37.1% of current tenure-track/tenured faculty members being scholars from traditionally underrepresented minority groups.

    In 2022, IUB was honored with the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity award.


    Indiana University provides IU SPH-B faculty outstanding teaching and research support through programs like the IU Faculty Academy on Excellence in Teaching (F.A.C.E.T.); extensive research development and research administrative support through the Office of the Vice President for Research; and innovative collaborations with organizations like the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, the IU School of Medicine (IUSM) and Regenstrief Institute's Center for Aging Research, and the IUSM's Center for Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases, and the IU Bloomington's Environmental Resilience Institute.

    In addition to outstanding programs like these, exciting things are happening in medical sciences at IUB with the opening of the IU Regional Academic Health Center in Bloomington and significant synergy in cross departmental collaborations in areas like environmental impacts on human health, nutrition, and aging.

    The SPH-B has strong connections to Indiana University School of Medicine, Dentistry, and Nursing, Informatics and Computing, Art & Design, Public and Environmental Affairs, and the soon to be Indiana University Indianapolis Fairbanks School Public Health, along with Purdue University programs in Pharmacy and Engineering.

    Basic Qualifications

    Qualifications:

    Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in Kinesiology, exercise science, or a closely related field (e.g., physiology, medicine, nutrition, health psychology, etc.) from an accredited educational institution.

    A firm commitment to the role of diversity in all aspects of research, education and service is essential. Candidates must have teaching experience at the undergraduate, graduate, or professional level.

    Good interpersonal skills, effective communication skills, and the ability to work cooperatively and congenially within a diverse faculty are required.

    Successful candidates must demonstrate a record of scholarly achievement appropriate for a mid-senior career level, including extramurally funded research as a corresponding principal investigator, current funding, or strong potential to secure external funding, and experience leading sizeable research programs.

    Responsibilities and Opportunity:

    Tenure track faculty in the Department of Kinesiology are expected to substantially contribute to the overall academic excellence of our mission by developing and/or maintaining a robust research portfolio including pursuing and obtaining major extramural research funding to conduct cutting-edge research in modern public health science both as a corresponding principal investigator and a collaborating investigator; teaching and mentoring students at the undergraduate and/or graduate level as designated by the department chairperson; and actively providing service internally to the department, school and university and externally to the profession and/or the community.

    Although all applicants with research expertise related to health and exercise science will be considered, candidates within the following areas of exercise science are especially encouraged to apply; a) energetics and energy metabolism, and interaction of exercise and nutrition behaviors, as related to weight management and obesity; b) behavioral science and interventions, c) health disparities and social determinants of health, d) brain health and mental well-being, and e) aging.

    Preference will be given to applicants with research strengths in areas that are synergistic with other SPH-B and Indiana University faculty and aligns with major funding priorities.

    This position is located on the campus of Indiana University, Bloomington (IUB) in Bloomington, Indiana, and successful candidates are expected to work on the IUB campus to allow full engagement with the department, school, campus, and community.

    Indiana University bases its tenure and promotion recommendations upon performance in three areas including research, teaching, and service.

    All individuals hired through this initiative are expected to excel in research and provide strong performance in teaching and service.
