The "Photonic Networks & Systems" (PN) department is seeking a candidate to support our research in optical communications engineering and signal processing, with a focus on optical communication systems using spatial multiplexing.

This exciting opportunity involves working on a Fraunhofer research project in collaboration with industry to develop novel optical fiber communication systems that utilize parallel transmission in different spatial paths.

This includes exploring transmission over optical fibers with multiple cores or propagation modes.

As part of our team, you will have the opportunity to work on setting up, testing, and validating these systems, as well as developing algorithms for digital signal processing.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Building, testing, and validating optical space multiplex communication systems in the laboratory and conducting measurement campaigns
  • Developing and testing algorithms for digital signal processing in optical space division multiplex systems
  • Numerical simulation of optical space division multiplex systems
  • Presenting research and development results through project reports, journal articles, and conference presentations
  • Supervising master's and bachelor's theses

What we are looking for:

  • Strong knowledge of optical communications and digital signal processing, as well as proficiency in software such as MATLAB, Python, LabView, and VPITransmissionMaker
  • Experience with laboratory work and a passion for experimentation
  • Excellent English language skills
  • Team player with a structured approach
