Under general supervision, performs a variety of skilled work in the operation, maintenance and repair of water treatment, pumping, boosting, control and distribution equipment and facilities that supply and distribute potable domestic water.

Water Systems Operator I

  • The Water Systems Operator I is the entry/trainee level class in the Water Systems Operator series that allows the incumbent to develop journey level knowledge and abilities. Initially, under immediate supervision, incumbents perform the more routine and less complex assignments within an established procedural framework, where there are mínimal consequences of error, including a wide variety of operation and maintenance tasks in water treatment plant operations, maintenance, and repair. As experience is gained, there is greater independence of action within established guidelines. This classification is distinguished from the next higher level classification of Water Systems Operator II by the performance of work requiring a lesser degree of skill in performing installation, preventative maintenance, and repair to water systems equipment.
Water Systems Operator II

  • The Water Treatment Plant Operator II is the journey level class in the Water Treatment Plant Operator series in which incumbents are expected to independently perform the full scope of assigned duties and demonstrate experience in installation, preventative maintenance, and repair activity of water treatment systems. This classification is distinguished from the next higher classification of Senior Water Systems Operator in that the latter is responsible for leading and performing a variety of skilled work related to the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of the City's water system and facilities.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Inspects, operates, and maintains municipal water related motors, pumps, meters and storage facilities; maintains pumping and chlorination/chloramination equipment; collects water samples and sounds deep wells to determine static and pumping levels; adjusts and monitors chemical dosages; flushes water distribution system.
  • Monitors and makes minor tests and repairs to telemetering equipment to ensure proper system operation.
  • Reads water production meters and gauges; assesses need to pump additional water as necessary.
  • Responds to water quality complaints and inquiries from water system users; maintains and prepares routine records and reports.
  • Participates as a crewmember in responding to emergency calls for assistance from the public; takes appropriate public safety measures and initiates corrective action.
  • Independently performs other water system maintenance duties, including but not limited to monthly meter reading, performing rereads as assigned by the Billing Specialist and/or supervisor, daily rounds, flushouts, meter replacement, procurement of parts as needed, and performing all work related to daytoday ancillary and miscellaneous activities associated with operating a fullservice water system.
  • Performs sample collection in accordance with all Title 22 requirements and City standards.
  • Assigned work will primarily be focused on distribution until the incumbent is welltrained and deemed ready to take on responsibilities associated with treatment.

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Any combination of education, training, and work experience to demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform in the position is qualifying.

EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED equivalent.


EXPERIENCE:


Water Systems Operator I:
One (1) year of full-time paid experience in operations and distribution in a municipal or private water company.


Water Systems Operator II:
Two (2) years of full-time paid experience in operations and distribution in a municipal or private water company.


LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:


  • Valid Class C California driver license, acceptable driving record, and evidence of insurance are required. A valid Class B California driver's license must be obtained during the oneyear probationary period.
Water science courses are desirable
