- Provides independent care to a specific patient population; acts as a clinical resource for others, integrates evidence into practice, assumes specific roles within the unit (e.g., arrest team for ICU, triage for ED, etc). Holds themselves accountable to patients and families for care processes and outcomes, to peers for group practice advancement, and to the nurse manager for overall work performance.
- Acts as a primary coordinating nurse; collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to plan and coordinate care, addressing patient/family needs.
- Serves as a clinical resource for peers.
- Assists in team development and evaluation of the Relationship-Based Care model; suggests improvements. Contributes to data collection related to Relationship-Based Care outcomes (e.g. handoffs, medication safety, etc).
- Participates in initiatives implementing Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators (NSQI).
- Participates in Performance Improvement, Evidence-Based Practice, or research at the unit level.
- Ensures compliance with standards and participates in unit-level activities for regulatory compliance.
- Supports charge nurse decisions; fulfills the charge role for assigned shifts when necessary.
- Follows and supports AACN guidelines for a Healthy Work Environment (communication, collaboration, decision-making, recognition, leadership, staffing); engages as a team member focusing on elements within the Healthy Work Environment.
- Acts as a preceptor, coach, mentor to new nurses and students. Contributes to the skills and development of ancillary personnel, attends educational offerings and in-services independently.
- Takes action to correct identified risks to patient safety.
- Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.
- Identifies potential risks in processes, procedures, devices, and communicates them to the relevant individuals.
- Unencumbered license as a Registered Nurse in Maryland or a Nurse Compact License (NSL).
- BSN preferred.
- Two years of recent critical care nursing experience within the past year. Sound knowledge and clinical skills.
- Completion of 10 contact hours of education every two years.
