    SUMMARY


    The primary purpose of the Director, Research Planning & Development is to implement and evaluate departmental research strategies, develop new research programs and related funding proposals, and direct administrative management of basic scientific, clinical, and translational research activities.

    JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
    Departmental Support

    Actively perform searches in funding databases for appropriate and relevant requests for proposals and share with faculty and trainees.

    Maintains other support for faculty and up-to-date resources to assist in grant submissions and progress reports.

    Acts and the liaison and departmental representative for large multi-disciplinary projects.

    Represents the department at professional meetings such as Grants Administration meetings as well as other research-related meetings within the institution and externally.

    Assists in maintaining tracking for departmental research programs to manage research information activities for the Department of Abdominal Imaging.


    Maintains copies of grants and confirms that all copies of assigned grants are logged correctly in the departmental grants files.

    Research Planning


    Provide periodic information and recommendations to the Department Administrator and Chair regarding the development, evaluation and revision of policies and procedures for the prioritization of research activities.

    Provide advice and resource information for the long-term strategic planning of research initiatives, including options, directions, funding sources, and feasibility.

    Provide administrative oversight and assistance in the development and evaluation of large, programmatic grants (e.g. P01, U54, U01, and T32 grants).

    Assist with developing strategies for philanthropic funding and assist with the submission of proposals (including budgets) to numerous philanthropic funding sources, working in collaboration with the Development Office.

    Participate in related advisory boards, strategic planning committees, and program retreats as requested. Serve as liaison between investigators, institutional and granting agency officials.

    Administrative Oversight of Grants, Contracts, Spores, Patents, etc. Life Cycles


    Manages the implementation of systems, policies, and procedures affecting the development, planning, and management of grant proposal budgets and contractual agreements.

    Ensures timely submission of proposals or agreements that meet institutional guidelines and sponsor requirements. Provides administrative and fiscal oversight for research programs. Develops, implements, and manages administrative procedures and policies to ensure operational and quality outcomes for grant submission activities.

    Oversee applications and annual reports for investigators, including but not limited to new drug applications or devices, correspondence with regulatory agencies, progress reports, service center utilization reports, and active/pending grant reports.

    Provide staff support to faculty participating in the development of master agreements, clinical research trials, and other external collaborations to include assistance with negotiations, development of agreements, collection of data, the integration of cross-institutional information and oversight of ongoing operations.

    Supervise the administrative staff working directly with the faculty on MTAs, patent submissions and assist faculty with these issues as needed.

    Direct the administrative support and monitoring for the development of patents as they move through the legal pathway.

    Service as an expert resource and advisor for faculty and staff in regard to all sponsored research application related issues.

    Provide ongoing information concerning changes in federal policy, institutional and divisional initiatives to relevant department staff and faculty.

    Fiscal oversight and planning

    Provide administrative and fiscal management and oversight for programs, projects and awards.

    Provides advice and counsel to faculty on fiscal issues for grant submissions, negotiations with sponsoring agencies, contract development, effort reporting, conflict of interest, and financial oversight of awards.

    Ensures timely and accurate expense and income tracking for grant/contracts and philanthropic company-based centers. Monitors balances and reconciles accounts. Meets regularly with faculty to review their research budgets, expenditures, personnel trending and effort reporting.

    Determine all personnel cost transfers for research personnel and works with Grant Program Manager and Financial Analyst to facilitate ePAF process.

    Oversee research related compliance activities. Direct preparation of final progress reports and manage the overall grant close-out process. Prepare departmental, divisional and institutional metric reports as requested.

    Required education:
    Bachelor's degree in science or medically related field, business or healthcare administration.


    Preferred education:
    Master's degree


    Required experience:

    Eight years experience in an academic research setting facilitating research program development and management of research resources to include two years of supervisory/management experience .

    With preferred degree, five years of required experience to include two years of supervisory/management experience.

    May substitute required degree with additional years of experience in research administration management at MDACC on a one to one basis.

    Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate program may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience.

    Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.
