    A. POSITION PURPOSE


    The Assistant Dean is responsible for leading efforts to address the needs of students living in the neighborhoods adjacent to campus.

    The Assistant Dean is the primary point of contact for matters that intersect with the student experience and off campus living, and works closely with students, city officials, local law enforcement, property management companies, and local residents to create a thriving neighborhood.

    The Assistant Dean provides leadership for Off Campus Living and supervision of the Off Campus Living Area Coordinator.

    The Assistant Dean is a hearing and appeal officer in the University Student Conduct System, and participates in the CARE Team system responding to Student of Concern reports.

    The Assistant Dean provides leadership, consultation, expertise for students, faculty, staff and the broader community for issues that intersect with the student experience.

    The Assistant Dean serves in the Office of Student Life's 24/7 on-call rotation.
    B. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    Off Campus Living

    Serve as the leader fostering strong and productive relationships between the University and a broad range of constituents: students, unaffiliated organizations, City of Santa Clara officials, Santa Clara Police and Fire Departments, local residents, and property owners and management companies.


    Identify and implement effective campus responses to off campus issues impacting off campus students, unaffiliated organizations, local residents, property owners and management companies, and City of Santa Clara officials and departments.


    Represent the Division of Student Life and University at city meetings, such as the Neighborhood University Relations Committee and other meetings as appropriate.

    Serve as the primary student conduct hearing officer for off campus conduct cases.

    Assess Off Campus Living programs and experience of off campus students to better serve the population.


    Remain current on local news impacting the neighborhoods adjacent to campus and local, state, and federal laws that pertain to the purpose of this position.

    Off Campus Living Supervision

    Provide leadership, direction, support, and evaluation for the Off Campus Living Area Coordinator who is responsible for programs and services for students living off campus and the student Neighborhood Ambassador program.

    Develop a comprehensive staff development program including orientation for new staff, and ongoing professional development opportunities.


    Develop and implement programs and publications addressing the needs of off campus students and promote civic responsibilities and engagement, neighbor relations, life transitional skills, and behaviors consistent with the University's Student Conduct Code.


    Establish goals, and conduct strategic planning and regular assessments for the purpose of evaluating the ability to meet those goals.

    Oversee technology including website and unit specific needs with day-to-day responsibilities residing with the program coordinator.

    Manage budget, contract, and financial responsibilities.

    University Student Conduct System Hearing Officer
    Serve as a hearing officer, with full sanctioning authority, and appeal officer for student conduct code cases.

    Initiate consultation with the Office of General Counsel and Office for Equal Opportunity and Title IX when appropriate.

    Create and maintain records pertaining to student conduct.

    Remain current on best practices, and legal issues pertinent to student conduct systems, conflict resolution, and restorative justice.

    Serve as Campus Security Authority when informed of allegations regulated under the Clery Act.

    Serve as a Responsible Employee for allegations regulated under Title IX.

    Student Well-Being

    Serve as a member of the Office of Student Life's 24/7 on-call rotation for the purpose of addressing significant student safety, well-being, and conduct issues that happen on and off-campus during non-business hours.


    Initiate appropriate responses to student of concern issues, including communication with campus entities, creation and distribution of publications, and support of student programs.


    Serve as a participant in the CARE Team system which is inclusive of contributing expertise and implementing response actions for Student of Concern reports.

    Remain current on research, best practices and legal issues pertinent to student well-being.

    Policy and Procedure Implementation, Interpretation, and Development

    Serve as a University resource for student conduct and well-being issues on and off campus, inclusive of communicating with parents and guardians.

    Responsible for policy interpretation and its implementation for student well-being, and other student misconduct matters.


    Provide advice, consultation, and support in the development of University-wide policies and procedures, and responses to issues and trends affecting the campus.

    Team Member and Other Responsibilities

    Serve as a member of the Office of Student Life team by assisting colleagues in the office when student conduct and student of concern caseloads are impacted.

    Participate and sometimes lead the development of new initiatives, services, programs pertaining to student life.

    Serve on University-wide committees as a representative of Student Life as appropriate to areas of responsibility.

    C. PROVIDES WORK DIRECTION

    Provides work direction, leadership, and supervision for the Off Campus Living Area Coordinator.

    D. GENERAL GUIDELINES

    Recommends initiatives and implements changes to improve quality and services.

    Identifies and determines cause of problems; develops and presents recommendations for improvement of established processes and practices.

    Maintains contact with customers and solicits feedback for improved services.

    Maximizes productivity through use of appropriate tools; planned training and performance initiatives.

    Researches and develops resources that create timely and efficient

    workflow.

    Prepares progress reports; informs supervisor of project status; and deviation from goals. Ensures completeness, accuracy and timeliness of all operational functions.

    Prepares and submits reports as requested and required.

    Develops and implements guidelines to support the functions of the unit.

    E. QUALIFICATIONS

    Knowledge

    Knowledge of the Jesuit mission of the University, strategic initiatives, and major developmental issues of students at a highly selective, multicultural, residential university.


    Understanding and support of the Jesuit tradition of education and a commitment to the fundamental values of service to others, community, and diversity as well as a commitment to and demonstration of skills, knowledge, and awareness to serve the unique needs of the diverse campus community of Santa Clara University.

    Thorough understanding of Student Development Theory.

    Skills

    Oral and written communication skills, including experience in delivering workshops and speaking to groups of various sizes.

    Commitment to customer service, both internal and external to the university.


    Competency in working with students of different cultural, ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds with special sensitivity to how personal experiences affect the transition into the University environment.

    Evidence of strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

    Experience with technology, database management, social media, and digital communication.

    Demonstrated ability to work beyond conventional business hours by having the flexibility to work in the evenings and on weekends when necessary.

    Education and/or Experience

    Required
    Master's degree in higher education administration, college student services, education, counseling or related field.

    Minimum of 6 years of progressively responsible work in an academic setting.

    Demonstrated experience with developing, implementing, and evaluating programs.

    Preferred
    Prior supervisory experience.

    Experience working with local government structures, committees and functions of local city councils.

    Experience working with fraternity and sorority organizations and their local and national leaders and advisors.

    Experience serving as an on-call staff person to provide crisis response 24/7.

    Experience with building community and addressing student safety and well-being in the context of a student residential program.


    Experience with assessing risk of harm to self or others with training by National Association for Behavioral Intervention and Threat Assessment or similar professional organization.

    Experience with responding to sexual violence and compliance with Title IX.

    Minimum of 2 years of related experience in adjudicating student conduct, conflict resolution, and implementation of restorative justice practices.
