- Acting with considerable independence, direct activities to ensure campus-wide EHS compliance and drive personal ownership and accountability for safety and compliance for all campus community members
- Manage multiple campus EHS programs within multiple disciplines and the staff responsible for implementing these programs
- Ensure SCU has policies, programs and procedures in place to address applicable EHS laws, regulations and requirements
- Interpret and appropriately apply EHS regulatory requirements for a university setting and effectively communicates these across all campus organizations
- Partner with key stakeholders across all facets of the campus utilizing a customer service-oriented approach to deliver safety and compliance services
- Coach campus leaders to be visible EHS advocates in their respective areas of responsibility, including Vice Presidents, Deans, Provost, etc.
- Recruit, manage and mentor EHS staff to advance the department and their professional careers
- Develop and implement EHS training programs that foster a compliance culture across the University
- Serve as SCU's lead EHS representative with external contacts including regulatory agencies, city officials, insurance representatives, etc. Serve as SCU's lead internal EHS representative on University committees, task forces, working groups, etc.
- Ensure a robust accident/incident review process to prevent recurrences and ensure accurate root cause analysis and thorough resolution of EHS incidents
- Provide project management and contractor/consultant supervision for the successful outcome of EHS projects and programs and in support of SCU capital projects
- Oversee EHS budgets and expenses, ensuring compliance with budgetary allocations
- Provide emergency response coordination for incidents in support of the Universities Emergency Plan and actively participate as a key member of SCU's emergency operations organization
- Perform other professional duties required by the Associate Vice President of University Operations
- Environmental protection programs including air permitting, stormwater and groundwater, soil contamination, tanks, pesticides, etc.
- Laboratory and research safety programs including chemical, radiation and biological safety
- Health and safety programs including IIPP, hazard communication, ergonomics, indoor air quality, accident investigation, hearing conservation, respiratory protection, bloodborne pathogens, hazardous materials inventory management and reporting, etc.
- Fire protection programs including fire protection service, maintenance and testing requirements
- Facilities, construction and contractor safety programs including fall protection, confined space, hot work, electrical safety, asbestos, lead, etc.
- Thorough knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and EHS management planning
- Utilize excellent interpersonal skills to effectively lead, motivate and influence faculty, staff, students and contractors
- Apply a customer service mindset in the delivery of EHS services to the campus
- Successfully collaborate in a multi-generational and diverse work environment
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously and ability to prioritize accordingly
- Superior written, verbal, analytical, organizational and presentation skills
- Demonstrated project management skills including managing EHS focused capital projects
- Ability to achieve results by working effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and with little supervision
- Perform work in a highly ethical and compliant manner
- Proficient in Google Workspace applications, Microsoft Excel, and other EHS software
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Safety or related scientific field required or equivalent combination of experience and/or education.
- CSP, CIH, or CHMM professional certifications preferred
- Master's degree in a related field is preferred.
- 12 years or more of progressively responsible EHS management experience or 10 years with a master's degree

- Considerable time spent at a desk using a computer
- Frequently walk between buildings on campus
- Occasional lifting and carrying, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching high and low, climb stairs and ladders. Frequent standing, walking, sitting.
- Comfortable spending time in locations with hazardous materials including chemical, radiological and biological hazards
- Required to travel to off campus locations on occasion
- Ability to wear PPE including N95 respirators, safety eyewear, gloves, laboratory and cleanroom garments
- Infrequently respond to incidents outside of normal business hours.
- Able to respond to campus in person within one hour
- Must have a valid California driver's license
- Occasional need to attend campus related events outside of normal business hours.

PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Sr.
Director of Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) provides and coordinates programs and services that minimize safety, health, environmental and regulatory risk to the SCU community in support of advancing its teaching, learning and research activities.
Through the promotion of a safe and healthy campus environment, the Sr.Director ensures the EHS Department maintains high standards of customer service in fulfilling its mission to:
DIRECT SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
Reporting to the Associate Vice President of University Operations, the Sr. Director manages the EHS Department personnel including full time employees, part-time student staff, consultants and contractors.
