Housing Development Director


The Director of Housing will develop and own the long-term strategy of our Affordable Rental Housing Assets, in line with the overall HSI Mission and Strategy, and will be the key Housing Development advocate with external organizations and agencies.

This position is responsible for ensuring the efficient and effective provision of affordable housing solutions to individuals and families in need spearheading efforts to expand our housing portfolio.


As a member of HSI's leadership team, this role serves as the liaison to the Board of Trustees' Housing Committee working directly with that committee's Chairperson to guide the committee for recommendations and/or presentations to the full board.


This full time, exempt position reporting to the CEO is onsite at our Cedar Knolls headquarters offices, offering flexible scheduling and potential for limited hybrid remote work, based on management discretion.

Position offered in the range of $120K - $130K annual salary.


Responsibilities include:


  • Collaboration with community organizations, government agencies, and other stakeholders to address housing needs, advocate for affordable housing policies and raise awareness about HSI's affordable rental housing program.
  • Ownership of the full cycle related the organization's efforts to expand affordable housing development including identification of housing sites to securing financing, leading design and development in collaboration with outside contractors and consultants and managing project timelines and budgets.
  • Fiscal accountability for the Housing Development department operation budgets.
  • Oversight of the Housing Development department operations including staffing, training, planning and process, including direct management of the facilities and maintenance staff and process.
  • Active, productive and positive participation as part of the Senior Leadership team of the organization.

Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as urban planning, public administration, business administration, real estate development, or related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in affordable housing management, property management, housing development, or related field, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or managerial capacity.
  • Strong knowledge of New Jersey affordable housing regulations, rental laws, affordable housing finance and development processes.
  • Demonstrated experience in financial management, budgeting, and reporting.
  • Demonstrated experience managing staff, and evidence of strong staff/people management skills, including communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fastpaced growth environment, both selfdirected and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholder, including tenants, staff, board members, community partners and development professionals.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and property management software(preferred). Experience with the MRI software is highly desirable; or ability to achieve functionality in the first year at HSI is required.
  • Satisfactory results of periodic background checks.
  • Willing and able to attend occasional off site and off hour meetings and events as required by the role.

Full time permanent staff of Homeless Solutions are eligible to enroll in fully paid medical, dental and life insurance coverage plans in accordance with HSI policies.
