    Description

    Position Summary:
    The Lead Registered Nurse will be responsible for supervising assigned nursing personnel and ensure adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. The job involves a moderate degree of complexity, with frequent new and varied work situations. The Lead RN will work under the general nursing process while using independent judgment to assign nurses and technicians to assigned patients. The nature of the job is diverse and requires strong clinical leadership skills.

    Detailed responsibilities:

    • Supervise assigned nursing personnel by providing direct patient care and coordinating patient care activities.
    • Collaborate with physicians and multidisciplinary team members in providing comprehensive care to patients.
    • Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, and attending in-service and workshops.
    • Act as a clinical resource and role model for department personnel.
    • Administer or make recommendations regarding performance evaluations, promotions, administration of personnel policies with staff, hiring or discipline.
    • Maintain established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality assurance programs.
    • Active participation in nursing strategic initiatives such as quality improvement and monitoring, TJC compliance, recruitment and retention of staff, and patient and employee satisfaction.
    • Delegate tasks and supervise the activities of other licensed and unlicensed care providers as necessary.
    • Ensure ability to assess, initiate and document nursing assessment, plan of care, interventions, evaluation, and re-evaluation of patient status.
    • Document and communicate pertinent information using computer and/or paper documentation tools in a timely and accurate manner.
    • Designate shift and schedule assignments call in staff, send staff home, and monitor attendance; assign duties in accordance with the plan of care, patient needs, and within the scope of staff qualifications and licensure/certification/registry and monitor completion of duties according to departmental and hospital policies.
    • Report potential and actual patient safety concerns, medical errors, and or near misses in a timely manner through the chain of command and document within the PSN system.
    • Establish a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients, friends, and families.
    • Promote the patient's independence by establishing patient care goals; teaching patients, friends, identified ley caregiver, and family to understand condition, medications, and self-care skills; answering questions.
    • Maintain a cooperative relationship among healthcare teams and resolve patient problems and needs by utilizing multidisciplinary team strategies.
    • Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures, and protocols.
    • Demonstrate proactive approaches to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning current policies and processes.
    • Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk.
    • Encourage patients to actively participate in their care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may 'not seem right.'

    Qualifications:

    • Education: Nationally Accredited Nursing Graduate and RN in the state of NM or as allowed by reciprocal agreement by NM. Bachelor's degree in nursing is preferred.
    • Experience: a minimum of five years of clinical experience in an acute care hospital setting, demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills, and experience in patient care, quality improvement, and staff development.
    • Credentials: ACLS, BLS, and Basic Arrhythmia certification required; specialty certification is preferred.
    • Physical conditions: Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects or people. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
    • Working conditions: may involve physical risk/injuries due to combative patients.
