    Who we are?

    Ethical Culture Fieldston School is a progressive PreK-12 independent school that has been serving students from throughout New York City and the surrounding suburbs since 1878. ECFS offers a rich curriculum in the arts, sciences, and humanities. A co-ed, nonsectarian school, it serves a diverse community of about 1,700 students on two campuses -- one in the Riverdale section of the Bronx and the other in Manhattan. Ethical Culture School, located on the Upper West Side at 63rd Street and Central Park West, is comprised of approximately 450 students Pre-K through 5th Grade and 80 faculty members.

    Position Summary
    Ethical Culture Fieldston School is seeking an experienced Physical Education Teacher for one year to teach students, in grades Pre-K through 5th Grade. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to the ethical values of the school and is passionate about working with young children. He/She/They will be one who advocates the ideals of Progressive Education, creates an environment that promotes excellence and is able to differentiate for children with different abilities.

    This is a one year leave replacement position with a salary range of $68,212-$161,916 (subject to union negotiations).


    Responsibilities

    The Head Teacher responsibilities will include:

    • Working collaboratively with other physical education teachers;
    • Maintaining a safe learning environment that helps foster social and emotional development for students;
    • Preparing for and communicating student performance and growth with parents and or guardians at scheduled conferences;
    • The ability to confidently address behavioral issues and other challenges that may arise in order to maintain a safe environment;
    • Participating in weekly grade-level and team meetings.


    Requirements
    The successful incumbent will possess:

    • A Master's Degree or be in a Master's program;
    • At least 1-3 years of experience teaching physical education to elementary school children;
    • A commitment to progressive education as outlined on our website;
    • The ability to manage time effectively, prioritize various tasks, stay organized and calm in challenging situations;
    • Skill and experience designing physical education instruction that is engaging and experiential;
    • The ability to assess and monitor individual student growth and promote physical development;
    • Initiative, creativity, flexibility, and collaboration;
    • Knowledge of various behavior management strategies;
    • The ability to share monthly updates about curricular initiatives;
    • A commitment to diversity, equity, and social justice;
    • Strong written and oral communication skills and experience

    communicating with various stakeholders;

    • Respect and appreciation for diversity in all of its forms;
    • The ability to listen effectively and be receptive to feedback.
