Susquehanna Steam Electric Station, one of the largest dual-unit, Boiling Water Reactor sites in the U.S., delivers approximately 2700 MW of electricity to the grid in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Susquehanna Nuclear is a member in good standing with the Utilities Service Alliance.

Located less than 30 miles south of Wilkes-Barre at the western edge of the picturesque Pocono Mountains vacation region, we are conveniently located near the arteries which connect all the major East Coast cities.

This position is responsible for the leadership and direction of the Radiation Protection support organization.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the areas of station RP support, dose reduction initiatives, inspections, surveys, and tests to ensure compliance with Federal, State and organizational regulations pertaining to personnel radiation exposure, radioactive effluent releases, and radioactive concentrations in plant systems and the environment.

This position is also responsible for reviewing the surveillances and reports generated by the department to support operation of the plant.

Additionally, duties include the ability to obtain, retain, and expand knowledge necessary to execute job duties in assigned area of work for procedures, plant systems, technical specifications, and applicable agency regulations.

Preparation, revision, and processing of radiation protection-related procedures is also required as well as performance of task evaluations for technician certification and re-certification and reinforcing safe work practices, coaching, control of department budget and interfacing with union personnel and other duties as assigned.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides first line supervision of Radiation Protection Technicians.
  • Defines work activity, delegates responsibilities, and conducts performance management.
  • Develop processes and procedures associated with the radiation protection program, generate required documentation, and manage schedules.
  • Oversees daily station scheduled work, projects, procedure development, revision and review, assessments, performance improvement initiatives, and corrective action.
  • Reviews and develops resolutions for audit findings and condition reports.
  • Coordinates and directs the planning, development, and implementation of a variety of radiation protection projects.
  • Reviews surveillances.
  • Perform task evaluations for technician certification and other training issues.
  • Performs other jobrelated duties as assigned.
  • Maintain necessary qualifications and expertise to be able to respond and lead in plant response to upset conditions within the Nuclear Emergency Response Organization.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school or equivalent.
  • Bachelor's or Equivalent Experience. Must have a minimum of 3 years' experience working in Radiation Protection, including 2 years' experience in nuclear power. Training and experience in the management of technical professionals is a must.
  • Extensive knowledge of Radiation Protection laws and regulations. In depth knowledge of Radiation Protection principles, radiological methodologies, and Susquehanna SES programs.
  • Selection criteria may include testing and/or assessment.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Meets or exceeds sitespecific ANSI standard requirements.
  • Experience desired.
  • Labor Relations experience is preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to include the ability to provide training (SME).
Special Requirements


Nuclear Specific Requirements:

  • Bachelor's in health physics, related Physical Science Specialty or equivalent education and/or experience.
  • Applied radiation protection or related experience: 3+ years
  • Related technical training: 2+ years
  • Experience working with federal regulatory and industry radiological protection program standards.
  • Experience with nuclear plant design and operations affecting potential personnel radiation exposure.
  • Obtain and maintain respiratory protection certification.
  • This position requires a behavioral assessment prior to being considered for an interview.
  • Serve as a member of the emergency response organization by filling a designated position within the oncall rotation.
  • Must live within 60 minutes to ensure proper implementation of Emergency Response plan.
