    POSITION SUMMARY:

    This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Teen Coordinator works to continuously strengthen the impact of the Whatcom Family YMCA Middle and High School programs. The Teen Coordinator must be dedicated to a nurturing and inclusive environment for all youth and staff, while engaging with the Whatcom County community.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
    1. Oversee all Teen Programs and activities. Monitoring daily operations to ensure that they adhere to health and safety policies and regulations.
    2. Recruit, hire, train, develop and schedule diverse personnel and volunteers as needed. Review and evaluate staff performance. Develop strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
    3. Maintain daily staff scheduling including but not limited to securing substitutes, communicating with staff and working in ratio when needed. Monitor substitute requests and follow up with employees as needed. Serve as primary staff when needed.
    4. Assist with establishing new program activities and expand programs within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans as directed by the Director of School Age and Teen Programs.
    5. Coordinate registration procedures and roster management.
    6. Develop and maintain positive relationships with program participants, parents, local school districts and community stakeholders and participate in community events.
    7. Represent programs at local schools and work closely with school personnel to identify program participants.
    8. Maintain necessary equipment and supplies, and arrange for use/contract with outside equipment and locations.
    9. In partnership with the Director of School Age and Teen Programs provide and encourage training opportunities for both volunteers and staff.
    10. Compile monthly statistics for grants as needed. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of and participation in program.
    11. Assist Director of School Age and Teen Programs with the development of the budget and monitor program budget to meet fiscal objectives.
    12. Assist with coordination and implementation of all major Family Events Halloween, Healthy Kids Day, etc.
    13. Implement YMCA HEPA standards into all programs.
    14. Provide leadership for annual fund raising campaign and Program committees as assigned
    15. Model relationship-building skills in all interactions. Respond to all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.
    16. Work with Marketing and Communications Director for recruitment and registration and to keep all programs in the public eye through website, news releases, PSA's flyers, demos, etc.
    17. Follow organization's policies and procedures regarding protecting youth from abuse; including screening and selection, training and supervision, and responding to allegations. Communicate to all staff and volunteers the organization's commitment to protect youth from abuse.
    18. Follow mandated reporting requirements.

    Qualifications

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    A successful candidate must be prepared to relate well with staff, youth and parents. A strong fundamental understanding of youth development and ability to train and coach others regarding the developmental needs of the children who are participating in programs is critical.
    1. A bachelor's degree, ideally in a related field of study to youth development, child development, outdoor education, education, recreation or similarly appropriate field, preferred.
    2. Minimum two years related experience working with youth ranging from 6th- 12th grade and within at-risk populations, preferred.
    3. Two years of experience supervising others, preferred.
    4. Have a firm working knowledge of child development, behavior management, positive conflict resolution and social emotional learning.
    5. Possess a strong ability to relate to and communicate with a wide diverse group of youth and adults from all social and economic segments of the community.
    6. Be self-motivated, well organized and have good decision making skills
    7. Ability to model YMCA core values of respect, responsibility, caring and honesty.
    8. Be comfortable dealing with crisis situations
    9. Within 30 days of hire include completion of: Child Abuse Prevention for Supervisory Staff; Working with Program Volunteers; CPR; First Aid; AED; Bloodborne Pathogens; TB test; Food Handler Permit.
    10. Basic computer knowledge including but not limited to Microsoft programs, Google, etc.
    11. Personal transportation and YMCA van certification required.

    • Sufficient strength, agility, and mobility to perform essential functions of position and to safely supervise children's activities including but not limited to swimming, rock wall climbing, van driving, etc. Must be able to sit, stand, walk for multiple hours.
    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use a computer for extended periods of time and be able to communicate using a computer and phone/smart device.
    • The employee frequently is required to sit and reach, and must be able to move around the work environment.
    • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up 10-40 pounds (i.e. food delivery packages, supply shipments, etc.).
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
    • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
