About Shalon Hurlbert:

Objective

A library leadership position that demands energy and creativity where I can use my more than ten years of experience, and specialization in public services programming to improve the lives of the patrons I serve.

Public Services

  • Created an inclusive and welcoming environment for Skagit Valley College students.
  • Taught Research Skills Instruction for College Success Skills classes.
  • Co-taught Library 201 in a learning community partnered with English 102.
  • Provided on-call integrated instruction for classes requiring Information Literacy support.
  • Created research guides for the subjects of Disability Awareness, and Jewish-American Heritage.
  • Hosted 90+ story-times per year for 3+ years at North Mason Timberland Library with an average attendance of 20, peaking as high as 70.
  • Provided monthly story-time outreach for 4 local preschools, including an ECEAP funded preschool, and a preschool for children with sensory processing disorders.
  • Developed and ran 165 teen programs with an attendance of over 1,500 during FY 13/14.
  • Developed annual summer reading programs that included crafts, video game tournaments, movie nights, and shows by local artists and musicians.
  • Worked with traditional and non-traditional public and private schools to offer programs, resources, and assistance to students of all backgrounds including underserved, ELL and learning-disabled teens.
  • Provided library tours and readers’ advisory to children and teens attending local community after-school groups.
  • Organized 2 book launches for a local Young Adult author with live music, readings, book signings, and a mixer where the teens were able to interact with her.
  • Ordered and managed the Young Adult collection for the Roanoke Public Library’s six branches. Materials included fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, games, music, and movies.
  • Partnered with AmeriCorps members to provide computer literacy instruction to youth.

Strategic Leadership

  • Strengthened the relationship between the library and teaching staff at SVC by fostering meaningful working friendships and providing in-person, face-to-face support.
  • Participated in an equity-focused weeding project of the Skagit Valley C0llege library funded by an Exceptional Faculty Award.
  • Acted as Faculty Advisor for the Redbird Gaming Club at Skagit Valley College. 
  • Served on the 2014 Collection Development Strategic Planning Committee for Roanoke Public Libraries.
  • Served on the 2014 Roanoke Public Library Programming Committee. 
  • Supervised 5-10 volunteers, work-study students, and paraprofessionals at the Roanoke Public Libraries.
  • Trained and supervised all student employees at Western Washington University Wilson Library and all Youth Services volunteers and work study students at the Roanoke Public Library.
  • Recruited, trained, and supervised teen volunteers for the Summer Library Program at North Mason Timberland Library on a yearly basis. 
  • Served as the In-Charge person at North Mason Timberland Library during branch manager absences. 
  • Contributed to the design of the new Youth Services Center built as part of the 2013 renovation of the Roanoke main branch library.
  • Crafted the Opening Day Collection coinciding with the aforementioned renovation. 
  • Helped to create a policy for circulating Video Games and built a base collection.
  • Coordinated the Diversion grant which provided financial support to over 200 youth and funding to house 17 young people.
  • Established a mutually beneficial partnership between the Nooksack Tribe’s homeless services and Northwest Youth Services.
  • Acted as liaison to the Bellingham Housing Authority to establish Section-8 housing vouchers for Northwest Youth Services’ clients.
