The Professional Relations Officer (PRO) is selected by and accountable to the Professional Relations Unit Manager with the approval of the Medical Relations Directorate Manager.

Performs advanced consultative services and technical assistance work.

  • Work involves planning, developing, establishing priorities, implementing and monitoring the Consultative Examination Provider (CEP) program; managing and maintaining a panel of clinical providers, making presentations to community and professional groups regarding the CEP program, conducting onsite inspections or desk reviews to evaluate program compliance; collecting and analyzing data on service gaps and needs, trends, etc. to recommend improvements.
  • The PRO performs other duties as assigned and required to maintain efficient operations. Extensive travel is required. DDS employees perform all business functions for SSA using the federal SSA network and equipment. Homeland Security Presidential Directive (HSPD)12 security clearance is required.

Essential Job Functions:


Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.


  • Conduct agency's Consultative Examination Provider program activities as assigned, including providing guidance and support to new and established CEPs in the development and integration of CE processes, methods and procedures.
  • Provide advanced consultative services and technical assistance to DDS staff and external customers in the development of the CEP program.
  • Recruit a panel of providers to conduct Consultative Examinations for Social Security Disability claimants to include the recruitment of Medical Evidence of Record (MER) vendors, providers and copy services suitable for participation in the electronic submission of medical evidence.
  • Establish standards for customerfocused communication and coordination within areas of responsibility and with all internal and external associates and customers.
  • Collect, organize, analyze, and prepare material for determining and evaluating program statistics, operational problems, training needs and overall program effectiveness.
  • Consult with the public, professional groups, community and private agencies on issues involving the CEP program and serve as project manager or team participant for special projects, workgroups and committees.

  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, managers, other DDS, HHS, SSA employees and the public

Initial Selection Criteria:


  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in a field
- relevant to the assignment is generally preferred. Experience and education may be substituted for
- one another.

  • 2. A minimum of three years experience with clinical provider relations.
  • 3. Experience in preparing and presenting complex information.
  • 4. Experience utilizing Microsoft Office computer programs.
  • 5. Experience in customerfocused communication and coordination within areas of responsibility.
  • 6. Exhibits a stable work history.

  • This position occasionally requires work during the weekends, holidays, and before or after normal business hours.
  • Individuals selected for positions with the Disability Determination Service (DDS) will go through a complete federal background investigation. A suitability determination by the Social Security Administration is necessary to determine whether an employee can be issued credentials in order to have access to Social Security disability data, records, and systems. The job offer is contingent upon a full suitability clearance through SSA.
