    The Unity Council is a non-profit Social Equity Development Corporation with a 60-year history in the Fruitvale neighborhood of Oakland. Our mission is to promote social equity and improve quality of life by building vibrant communities where everyone can work, learn, and thrive.

    Our programs aim to provide the community with the tools, knowledge, and resources to transform their lives and ultimately achieve their long-term educational, career, and financial goals. These holistic programs and services reach more than 11,000 individuals and families annually in five languages. Programs include: early childhood education, youth mentorship and leadership development, employment services, career readiness training, housing and financial stability, senior citizen services, affordable housing and neighborhood development, and arts and cultural events. Our work expands beyond the Fruitvale district and now reaches across Oakland and into Concord. The Unity Council employs a diverse workforce of more than 350 people who reflect the linguistic, cultural, and ethnic identity of the communities we serve.

    Program Summary

    The Children and Family Services programs include Head Start, Early Head Start, State Pre-Kindergarten, Home Based Services, and Developmental Play Groups. Over 900 children birth through kindergarten entry and 32 expectant parents and their families receive child development and comprehensive family services through the Unity Council. The programs are diverse, multilingual, developmentally appropriate, culturally responsive, and individualized for each child and family services are provided in seven centers and two home-based programs throughout Oakland and Monument Corridor neighborhood in Concord, CA.

    Position Summary

    Under the guidance of the Center Director, the Assistant Center Director provides quality primary care giving for children in a safe and supervised early care and education setting. Promotes the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development of Head Start children enrolled in the program. In addition, this position assists the Center Director in supervision and operations of the center.

    Responsibilities

    This position will serve as acting director when Center Director is not present. This position will have two hours per day for office work to be able to complete assigned responsibilities, in addition to regular prep-time given to teachers. A break teacher will release the Assistant Center Director from classroom.
    • Serve as lead teacher in assigned classroom when not in office.
    • Support the center director in giving breaks, when available.
    • Act as acting director during absence of center director.
    • Assists teachers with hands-on developmentally appropriate practice in ECE.
    • Provides training to staff, when needed.
    • Assist teachers with children's guidance as needed.
    • Keep inventory of school supplies.
    • Works with the Director and School Readiness Coordinator on on-going communication between management and teaching staff and keeps management team informed of teaching needs.
    • Assist in planning and participates in staff meetings, center events, and parent meetings as requested.
    • Conducts tours and provides interested families with information about our program.
    • Plans and coordinates field trips.
    • Supervises opening or closing staff (depending on the Center Director schedule) and ensures building is secure at the end of each day.
    • Other duties as assigned by Center Director and Management.
    Qualifications

    • Minimum of two years' teaching experience and at least one year experience working with preschool children or infants and toddlers.
    • One year administrative and supervision experience, preferably at a childcare center.
    • An ability to work with a multidisciplinary team including families, family advocates, supervisors, content area specialists, and consultants to provide child development and comprehensive family services to serve the whole child in the context of his family and community.
    • A desire to work in a diverse and inclusive environment.
    • Caring, compassionate approach to working with children, families, and colleagues.
    • Bilingual Spanish/English or Asian Language/English preferred.
    • Physical ability to lift preschoolers occasionally in the preschool programs and a commitment to utilize safe lifting techniques for lifting children, supplies and furnishings.
    Requirements
    • Site Supervisor Permit or higher from Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
    • BA Degree in Child Development or related field preferred; or BA Degree with 15 ECE units including 9 units Core Courses and 6 Infant/Toddler Units plus Supervised Field Experience.
    • AA Degree in Child Development or related field; or AA Degree with 24 ECE units including 9 units Core Courses plus 6 units administration and 2 units adult supervision.
    • 6 units Infant/Toddler Care.
    Essential Functions
    • Must be able climb stairs, reach, bend, lift 20-30 pounds, crawl, kneel, stoop, twist, grasp with hands and fingers materials, use arms and legs, able to walk, climb ladders if applicable.
    • Regularly required to operate standard office equipment (personal computer, photocopy machine, fax machine, etc.).
    • Ability to work on a computer for up to 7 hours a day.
    • Regularly required to sit for long periods of time, and occasionally stand and walk.
    • Regularly required to use hands to operate computer and other office equipment.
    • Close vision required for computer usage.
