    IOM Specialist I-Neuromonitoring - New York, United States - Mount Sinai Medical Center

    Description


    As an inexperienced neuromonitoring technician, the IOM Specialist I will develop competencies in the basics of Intraoperative Monitoring (IOM) testing and associated interventions and perform intraoperative monitoring under direct supervision.


    Within three months of the date of hire, the IOM Specialist I will be able to perform neuromonitoring for simpler cases that include spine surgeries and peripheral nerves surgeries.

    The techniques with which the IOM Specialist I must gain expertise include the elicitation of somatosensory and motor-evoked potentials, and spontaneous and triggered EMG for surgical cases that place the nervous system at risk and peripheral nerve surgeries.

    In addition, the IOM Specialist I will obtain CNIM certification within 18 months of the date of hire.

    Responsibilities

    As a Trainee, the employee will be learning and training on the following duties and responsibilities and expected to be fully adept within 6 -9 months:


    • Understands the important details of each case in order to select appropriate monitoring techniques.
    • Participates in the planning of intraoperative monitoring modalities appropriate to the surgical procedure.
    • Performs all pre-operative patient verifications, communications with surgeons and anesthesiologists, and documenting.
    • Selects montage(s) appropriate for surgical procedure being performed.
    • Prepares patients for IOM and acquiring signals.
    • Engages in timely discussions with the surgeons and anesthesiologists regarding all issues related to IOM.
    • Performs basic IOM as needed (e.g., spinal and peripheral nerve surgeries).
    Acquires expertise in setting up and confirming proper operation of all equipment including:

    a.
    Testing of equipment and checking integrity of electrodes

    b.
    Arranging head boxes, cables, and electrodes for minimization of artifacts and electrical hazards preventing electrodes from being dislodged, dried out, or contaminated with fluids

    c.
    Ensuring that all stimulators are delivering expected stimuli to the correct site.

    d.
    Assist technologists in troubleshooting electrical interference and software problems.

    e.
    Maintain equipment and perform simple repairs as needed.


    • Documents procedure, modalities used and tests performed, surgical maneuvers and events, levels of inhaled anesthetics, dosage of intravenous anesthetics, use of muscle relaxants, blood pressure, body temperature, and other physiologic parameters as appropriate.
    • Documents any and all communications or warnings relevant to patient care including corrective action taken.
    • When monitoring cases, follows standard Mount Sinai IOM program policies and protocols.
    • Follows standard precautions for infection control per Mount Sinai policy and procedures.
    • Follows standard Mount Sinai precautions for hazardous material management.
    • Completes post-operative reports and billing forms.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.
    Qualifications


    • No minimum experience required. Entry Level trainee position. Will be learning IOM techniques involved in spinal and peripheral nerve surgeries.

    Compensation


    The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements.

    The salary range for the role is $ $ Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and hospital need.
