    Departmental Overview

    The University Library is comprised of 24 libraries including the Doe/Moffitt Libraries, The Bancroft Library, The C.V. Starr East Asian Library, the Northern Regional Library Facility and additional the libraries that serve as subject specialty libraries for departments and schools.

    Position Summary:

    The UC Berkeley Library is an internationally renowned research and teaching facility at one of the nation's premier public universities. In a highly diverse and intellectually rich environment, Berkeley serves a campus community of 25,500 undergraduate students, 10,300 graduate students, and 2,000 faculty. The Library comprises 21 campus libraries -including the Doe/Moffitt Libraries, the Bancroft Library, the C. V. Starr East Asian Library, and subject specialty libraries. With a collection of more than 11 million volumes and a collections budget of over $15 million. the Library offers extensive collections in all formats and robust services to connect users with those collections and build their related research skills. The Library has a current operations budget of approximately $43 million with approximately 400 FTE employees and 600 student employees hired throughout the academic year and summer. Distribution, Storage and Mail Services is under the overall auspices of the Chief Administrative Officer for the Library Division. This unit must become more efficient and effective in responding to changing business demands and expectations in the areas of logistics, i.e. shipping and receiving, asset management and storage, relocation and surplus collection, mail operation, and material distribution and collection. The position performs a variety of tasks which include the following: sort and classify all outgoing mail according to USPS regulations (foreign and domestic) for all classes of mail. Prepare packages for shipping with various common carriers. Operate postage meter machines. Create FedEx shipping labels via Sort all incoming mail for distribution. Load and unload a six-ton truck and delivery van. Drive a six-ton truck, electric cart, and delivery van for campus and off-campus deliveries.

    Responsibilities

    • Sort U.S. and intra-campus mail for distribution and dispatch.
    • Sort all Doe, Moffitt, and subject specialty libraries incoming mail, books, and packages into designated departmental receptacles; scan incoming packages for Bancroft, Library Systems, and other units into Neotrack tracking system; operate push cart to deliver mail to departments throughout Doe and Moffitt libraries.
    • Operate various types of equipment including Neopost Postage Meter system to meter outgoing USPS mail and for FedEx shipments, typing machines, metering machines, billing data collection stations, electronic scales, pallet mover, and other mail-related equipment.
    • Assist in loading dispatch mail.
    • Safely load and unload six-ton bobtail truck with book trucks, lugs, and mail.
    • Stack hampers, tubs, trays, and hang mail sacks. Unload mail for sorting from a variety of containers weighing up to 70 lbs. Order and/or pick up equipment and supplies from U.S. Post Office as needed.
    • Answer telephones professionally and courteously. Process postage due and business reply mail.
    • Process outgoing certified, registered, and insured mail.
    • Perform minor mail machine maintenance including but not restricted to installing meter and printer tape, unjamming meter machines, adding ink to meters, etc.
    • Keep the loading dock area free of congestion and hazards.
    • Keep work area and equipment clean and free of safety hazards.
    • Keep machines free of paper dust and particles by air hosing.
    • Read postal bulletins for updates on changes in postal regulations and services.
    • Assist with furniture and equipment moves within the library.
    • Perform other related duties as required.
    Campus Mail:
    • Separate and resolve insufficiently addressed mail for proper processing, sort mail and parcels with speed and accuracy to routes and departments to meet the department's service standards.
    • Wrap, box, classify, rate, and meter outgoing mail, books, letters, and various correspondence.
    Outgoing Mail:
    • Separate stamped mail and resolve incorrectly addressed mail for proper processing, sort, and rate mail by category and/or recharge number and meter mail to meet dispatch deadlines.
    • Process custom-designed express mail sacks for Southern U.C. campuses and international mail for timely dispatch.
    Special Services:
    • Perform special pick-ups and deliveries on campus, prepare freight and parcels for shipping through the appropriate vendor including UPS, Federal Express, etc: which may require packing, rewrapping, and handling heavy items such as crates and boxes weighing up to 70 lbs.
    • Drive various vehicles (six-ton bobtail truck, cargo van) in a safe manner to deliver and transport book trucks, lugs and mail to the Northern Regional Library Facility (NRLF), Bancroft Regatta, and subject specialty libraries on and off campus; deliver and pick up empty and full book trucks to or from subject specialty libraries all according to assigned route schedules within established times.
    • Drive a van to pick up paged books from subject specialty libraries.
    • Perform basic preventative maintenance including checking fluids, tires, wipers, etc; to ensure the safety of the vehicle.
    • Keep vehicles clean inside and out. Drive vehicles to repair garages as needed for maintenance. Report any damage or mechanical problems immediately to the supervisor.
    • Deliver and/or pick up mail at the U.S. Post Office.
    • Receives, records, and delivers accountable mail (registered, certified, insured) as well as stamp orders.
    Required Qualifications
    • Mail Processor Ability to read, write, perform mathematical calculations, understand and follow generalized and specific work instructions, both oral and written.
    • Perform tasks for prolonged periods while standing, walking, driving, operating hand trucks, electric carts, forklifts, and other motorized moving equipment.
    • Lift and transport heavy mail sacks.
    • Knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
    • Two years of experience in the handling of campus and U.S. mail, including a working knowledge of postal regulations and postal rates and/or equivalent experience/training.

    Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

    The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $23.08 (Step 7) - $24.00 (Step 9).
    • This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
    • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
