The Custodian performs custodial duties, minor maintenance and other miscellaneous duties necessary to maintain the cleanliness, orderliness, appearance, sanitation and safety of university buildings and facilities both inside and outside. Work involves varied cleaning tasks, some of which may require heavy lifting. Assigned areas may include offices, classrooms, laboratories, residence halls rooms, meeting rooms, lounge areas, art gallery, auditorium, gymnasium, fitness center, and all corridors, hallways, and stairwells. Must be able to perform physical activities and work under inclement weather conditions.

This position is considered essential and requires the incumbent to report to work when the University suspends normal operations and classes and during inclement weather.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Clean, care and maintain buildings and facilities up to the standards and requirements set by the University of New Haven.
  • Performs routine and comprehensive custodial maintenance of assigned facilities including, but not limited to:
  • Vacuum
  • Sweep/Dust
  • Wet mop
  • Strip/Wax floors
  • Wax/Polish Furniture
  • Carpet Care/Extraction
  • Spot Removal
  • Window Cleaning
  • Rest Room Cleaning
  • Trash Removal
  • Recycling Removal
  • Litter Removal
  • Cleans & disinfects restrooms, locker rooms, health centers, and other facilities and restock with adequate supplies.
  • Handles all custodial equipment, materials and supplies in a safe and responsible manor to accomplish routine and comprehensive custodial operations.
  • Spot clean and/or shampoo rugs, carpets, and furniture using proper chemicals, supplies, equipment, and required safety gear in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Wash/clean accessible, interior and exterior windows, blinds, vents and screens which may require the use of ladders.
  • Collects and properly disposes of recycling materials, empties bins and collection containers into proper recycling facilities.
  • Maintains walks, common areas, entryways and areas surrounding assigned building by emptying trash, picking up litter, emptying cigarette butt containers, removing gum, and sweeping and washing concrete areas as needed.
  • Maintains storage areas and cleaning equipment, materials and supplies in a clean, safe and orderly manner.
  • Communicates and documents all facility repairs, equipment repairs, daily work status and work orders to supervisor.
  • Observes safety standards and practices and reports all safety hazards to supervisor.
  • Move furniture to prepare for cleaning, and event setup and breakdown as needed.
  • Work scheduled overtime, special events and be on call for emergencies.
  • Shovel and remove snow and ice from designated areas as needed.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to perform strenuous activities, including but not limited to walking, bending, standing, stooping, climbing stairs and ladders.

Incumbent must also be able to lift and/or move items up to
60 pounds.


QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:


  • Three (3) years of Custodial experience is preferred, experience in a school, college or university is a plus.
  • Knowledge of standard cleaning procedures, chemicals, products and equipment
  • Must be able to drive and hold a valid CT state driver's license.
  • Must be able to use all necessary tools and equipment in a safe and proper manner.
  • Perform duties in adherence to training standards and supervisory directives.
  • Effectively communicate in English both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to read and understand Safety Data Sheets, instructions, manuals, signs, posters and product labels.
  • Must be able to maintain acceptable work habits including but not limited to punctuality and regular and reliable attendance and observation of break and lunch times.
  • Must work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.
  • Must be able to work independently and in a collaborative manner with peers.
  • Must have superior customer service skills and ability to communicate in a professional, courteous, timely and effective manner to internal and external customers.
