    About the College:

    About the Department:

    Position:

The department of Chicana/o Studies at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) is seeking a tenure-track faculty member in Chicana/o Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor.

Specifically, the Department seeks candidates whose specialization is in Education. We seek candidates who have an active record working with and/or conducting research on culturally and linguistically diverse student populations, such as in K–12 schools with large Chicana/o/Latina/o/Indigenous/ immigrant enrollments. Candidates will have a record of teaching in K–12 educational settings, with at least three years of experience in K–12 classrooms. We seek candidates who approach teaching, scholarship, and research through an interdisciplinary and intersectional lens, with a critical ethnic studies approach/perspective.

The successful candidate will teach Chicana/o/Latina/o/Indigenous education courses, including undergraduate and graduate courses on the Chicana/o/Latina/o child and adolescent; equity and diversity; heritage language; language acquisition and learning; educational theories in schooling; as well as education courses in the Chicana/os Studies Social Science Subject Matter Program, Ethnic Studies Certificate-Chicana/o Studies program, and the Chicana/o Studies MA Program.

In addition to teaching, the position requires weekly office hours, attending faculty meetings, participation in assessment of student learning, and service to the department, college, and university. The successful candidate will be held to the standards and requirements of the college and department in which he/she/they is/are housed for recommending tenure and promotion. Given CSUN's commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and engagement in a diverse environment, the successful candidate will help the Department achieve equitable academic outcomes for all students through teaching, student mentorship, scholarship, and service.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Doctoral degree (Ph.D./Ed.D.) from an accredited institution. Candidate's scholarly focus should be on Chicana/o Studies, Ethnic Studies, Education, and/or other related areas. Candidates must earn their terminal degree by August 16, 2024.
    • Demonstrated ability or clear potential to teach using critical Chicana/o pedagogical and community responsive theory and practice including active student engagement and collaborative learning.
    • Demonstrated ability or clear potential to teach in person and online college- or university-level undergraduate and graduate Chicana/o/Latina/o courses, such as Chicana/o/Latina/o child and adolescent; equity and diversity; heritage language; language acquisition and learning; educational theories in schooling.
    • Evidence of experience or clear potential working effectively with Chicana/o/Latina/o/Indigenous communities.
    • Evidence or clear potential of a scholarly agenda in Chicana/o Studies, Ethnic Studies, Education, and/or related fields.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Three years K-12 teaching experience, including non-traditional settings such as the juvenile justice system.
    • Experience mentoring or clear potential to mentor racially/ethnically/linguistically diverse students.
    • Experience adopting inclusive approaches to mentoring students.
    • Experience using culturally responsive pedagogy and using pedagogies in Chicana/o Studies, such as cultural and ancestral knowledge that leads to equitable outcomes for all students.
    • Experience creating a student-centered learning environment that includes working with students from racially/ethnically/linguistically diverse backgrounds.
    • Record working with community organizations, e.g., developing community-based educational programing/policy, developing courses/programs outside of school structures, advocating for the rights of students.
    • Active record of participation in or potential for working with professional organizations and/or unions. Professional organizations and/or unions including but not limited to NEA, AERA, AESA, NACCS, NABE, NCORE, NCTE, and HACU; and AFT.

    Responsibilities:

Faculty success at CSUN is measured by three criteria: teaching effectiveness; contributions to one's field of study; and service to the University and Community. The standard teaching assignment is 12 units (4 courses per semester). However, new faculty members in their first two years teach 9 units per semester (3 courses). Successful candidates should be able to teach courses offered by the Chicana/o Studies Department. Faculty members are encouraged to develop new courses as needed by the Department.

Peer-reviewed publications are important for tenure and promotion, and CSUN faculty members can apply for competitive awards that provide course releases for research or fund travel for research. Presentations at academic conferences are supported with annual travel funds. Tenure-track faculty members participate in shared governance, usually in Program, College, and University committees and other service assignments.

    Application Deadline:

Screening of applications will begin January 15, 2024. Priority will be given to applicants who meet the screening deadline; however, the position will remain open until filled.

    How to Apply:

    Applicants must submit:

    1. A cover letter that addresses the qualifications, responsibilities, and the candidate's teaching philosophy described above (2 to 3 pages).
    2. A curriculum vitae which includes contact information for three professional references who can address the candidate's teaching, research, and service qualifications.

In later stages of the search process, applicants will be requested to provide additional materials, such as a course outline or syllabus, professional work samples, proposals, verification of degrees, etc.

At time of appointment, the successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must have authorization from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to work in the United States.
