Daniel Shanken

I am an artist and researcher with a focus on new and emerging technologies and their cognitive effects. My practice involves installations, video, sculpture, sound, and media. I have participated in numerous international exhibitions at venues such as Stanley Picker Gallery, ICA London, Art Basel Hong Kong, Whitechapel Gallery, CCA Glasgow, Nottingham Contemporary, CFCCA Manchester, V Art Center Shanghai, and Kiasma Helsinki. I completed my BFA in Fine Art Media at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena in 2006, MFA in Art Practice at Goldsmiths University of London in 2012, and my PhD in contemporary art practice in 2023. Before starting as an Assistant Professor at AVA (HKBU) in 2019, I worked as an Art Practice Tutor at Goldsmiths University London, and a visiting lecturer at the Royal College of Art London.

• Supervising students across the BFA and MFA on projects relating to
  their endof year project, from ideation to completion
• Conducting tutorials and mentoring individual students 
• Responsible for teaching three original classes per term in areas such as art practice, sculpture, video art, new technologies, animation, generative art, installation, and spatial practice
• Co-creator and co-designer of a lab that researches and implements new technologies such as AI, ML, and game engines
• Meeting with faculty to create program structure and admissions
  Organizing workshops about artistic practice and theory

• Mentored a group of 10 MA students to year-end completion,
  including first year and graduating students
• Assigned relevant readings and led research trips
  Organized an exhibition of student work
• Led lectures and workshops on technology, digital art, media art, animation, and perception in
  relation to contemporary art and design
• Graded and advised on the outcome of student projects
• Met with faculty to design course workshops and structure
