    Description

    Position Overview:

    The Assistant Facility Manager plays a vital role in the metal recycling industry by supervising all operations within the facility, including ferrous, non-ferrous, transportation, and administration. This position supports the Facility Manager in ensuring safety and environmental compliance, setting production goals, managing transportation activities, analyzing performance metrics, overseeing employee training, maintaining budgets, and fostering a positive work environment. The Assistant Facility Manager serves as a backup to the Facility Manager and collaborates with various teams to drive operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.

    Safety and Environmental Compliance:

    • Assist in maintaining safety and environmental compliance across the facility.
    • Collaborate with the Facility Manager and the safety department to lead safety improvement activities and actively participate in the company's safety program.

    Operations Management:

    • Manage direct reports to establish operating schedules, daily and monthly production goals, and operating processes in collaboration with the Facility Manager and other management staff.
    • Direct trucking and rail transportation activities to ensure efficient logistics.

    Performance Measurement:

    • Utilize performance metrics such as tons/hour, downtime percentage, NF pounds recovered, and operating costs to measure and improve operational performance and quality.
    • Review and analyze production, quality control, safety, maintenance, and operational reports to identify nonconformities and implement corrective actions.

    Employee Training:

    • Manage employee training programs for all operational positions to ensure competence and adherence to operational standards.

    Backup Support:

    • Provide backup support to the Facility Manager and other management staff when needed.

    Budgeting and Cost Management:

    • Prepare and monitor annual budgets and monthly operating costs.
    • Maintain accurate production records and ensure adherence to budgetary guidelines.

    Product Standards and Inventory Management:

    • Ensure outbound product standards meet the applicable steel mill specifications.
    • Work with the Maintenance team to order spare or replacement parts and maintain inventory to meet production needs.

    Customer Relations:

    • Collaborate with the Marketing staff to grade and price scrap materials.
    • Maintain excellent relationships with both commercial and peddler customers.

    Administrative Duties:

    • Perform other responsibilities as assigned or directed.

    Requirements:

    • High school diploma or GED required; associate or bachelor's degree preferred.
    • 3-5 years of recent and relevant experience supervising a staff in industrial manufacturing and/or heavy equipment production.
    • Familiarity with mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and large motor sub-systems, as well as metals recycling operations and shredders.
    • Willingness to interact with and assist customers.
    • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions within a heavy manufacturing environment.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel for communication and information tracking.
    • Excellent open communication style to effectively engage with employees at all levels.
    • Valid driver's license required.
