    The Orange County Corrections Department (OCCD) operates the third largest jail system in the State of Florida with more than 1,500 employees including over 1,000 certified correctional officers.

    It serves and protects the citizens of Orange County by providing for the care, custody and control of legally incarcerated inmates in a safe and secure environment, and provides services for those individuals supervised in community programs.

    The Security and Support Operations Divisions are responsible for the safety and security of all personnel, volunteers and visitors, as well as inmates in the custody of OCCD.

    These divisions are comprised primarily of certified personnel who work in partnership with health professionals, civilians, as well as local law enforcement and other divisions.

    Correctional Officers are assigned to "A" and "B" squads here at OCCD. The squads cover various shifts, which staff the 24-hour operation. Within these squads, an officer is assigned to a specific post. Within the Security and Support Operations Divisions are specialty units and teams for officers who qualify.
    Representative Duties
    This position is responsible for ensuring the health, safety and secure confinement of inmates in the County correctional facilities.

    Supervises inmates to prevent altercations, intimidation, undesirable or illegal acts, intercedes when necessary, and to ensure the safety of the facility, other Correctional staff and the inmates.

    Maintains accurate count and current location of all inmates or Youthful Offenders assigned.
    Completes and maintains required records, logs and reports.
    Performs cell and body searches as required.
    Ensures safe, secure and orderly movement of inmates throughout the facility.
    Performs security and safety checks and adheres to facility security procedures.

    Ensures, to the limit of authority possible, that inmate rights are observed and that they are treated according to policy.

    Supervises inmate or Youthful Offender work crews.
    Acquires knowledge of all emergency plans and procedures and maintains emergency equipment.
    Minimum Qualifications
    High School graduate or equivalent.
    Must be at least 19 years of age and a United States citizen.
    Must not have been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor involving moral turpitude. Must possess Florida certification as a correctional officer according to Florida Statue

    Applicants who obtained their certification after July 1, 1993, must also provide results of Florida Officer Certification examination indicating achievement of mastery level.

    Must be able to work all shifts, weekends and holidays. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License.
    Shift may vary depending on area of assignment.

    Notes
    In addition, Orange County Corrections uses the following hiring standards in accordance with FDLE regulations and they include, but are not limited to:

    Not have pled guilty or nolo contendere after July 1, 1981, to any felony or a misdemeanor that involves perjury or false statement, whether or not adjudication was withheld or sentence suspended.

    Not have committed a felony crime within three years of the date of application.

    Not have been convicted, accepted a plea bargain, or entered a pre-trial diversion program of any offense which can be considered domestic violence.

    Not have been using or possessing any controlled substance within the last three (3) years prior to application and continuing to employment.

    Not have been involved in any illegal sale or trafficking of a controlled substance to others whether for profit or not.

    Not have been discharged from a job within the last year.
    Not have a Written Reprimand or greater within six (6) months from date of application.

    Not have five (5) convictions singly or in combination for any traffic violations, except parking tickets, covered under any State or Federal law, or any valid ordinance of a municipality or county.

    All applicants selected for hire must successfully complete the Orange County Corrections Department background screening process.

    The screening process consists of a background check, fingerprints, polygraph, psychological, physical/drug screening, and the final decision of the Hiring Authority.

    206 states, in part, that:
    Body Ornamentation
    Employees hired after October 1, 2022, are prohibited from having tattoos, brands, or body ornamentation above the collar bone.

    Employees hired after September 1, 2015, will not use gold, silver, or other caps or veneers for the purpose of dental ornamentation unless deemed medically necessary and prescribed by a licensed dentist.

    Teeth, whether natural, capped, or veneer, will not be ornamented with designs, jewels, or initials.
    Regardless of hire date, employees will be prohibited from unnatural shaping teeth for non-medical reasons (e.g. fangs) or wearing removable dental ornamentation (e.g. grills).
    Notes
    All applicants will be required to participate in the Physical Abilities Test (PAT)
    The PAT consists of a series of physical activities designed to evaluate fitness to perform specific job-related tasks.

    The battery of job-related field tests is intended to be completed in the fastest possible time and will require effort on the part of the applicant.

    The test is designed to measure balance, muscular endurance, strength, flexibility, aerobic and anaerobic power and capacity, and fine motor skills.

    The PAT minimum fitness standards that candidates are required to successfully perform are:
    Navigate a yard obstacle course, including a 50-foot serpentine run
    Negotiate a high step hurdle over obstacles approximately 24-inches tall
    Low crawl
    Climb through a window 40-inches tall
    10-stair ascent and descent
    Use a training gun to fire six (6) simulated rounds with each hand
    Manipulate a locking mechanism

    Starting salary:
    $22.53/hour to $32.81/hour, ($50,016-$72,838). Starting salary will be determined in accordance with collective bargaining agreement.

    Educational Requirements

    If you have obtained education from a country other than the United States, your degree or diploma must be evaluated to determine the United States equivalency by a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Service (NACES) or the Association of International Credentials Evaluation (AICE) at your expense.
