Description
This position requires a high degree of flexibility. Expected hours are Monday – Friday 7am – 5pm + nights, weekends & holidays as needed.SUMMARY:
Responsible for day-to-day operations of Transportation department to ensure customer needs are met.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leads department as a mentor style manager and helps focus the efforts of the team.
Participates in and evaluates efforts in recruitment and retention, interviewing, testing, hiring, orientation, and coaching/ development of new employees, supervisor, clerical staff, and professional drivers.
Provides leadership and coordinates all activities, programs, equipment and other resources between these departments and staff to maximize effectiveness, efficiencies and provide consistent results.
Monitor/ maintain high level of on-time delivery reliability service & performance. Manages and provides analysis for all key performance indicator measurements; pro-actively takes steps to problem-solve and addresses known issues. Maintains a high level of customer service delivery satisfaction with our customers.Responsible for all P & L duties within department, gathering, evaluating, and reporting financial information as needed. Review and reports department expenses to senior level management at month-end and operate each department within budgeted guidelines. Evaluates capital needs and makes recommendations for equipment requirements.
Reviews and approves driver payroll on a weekly basis as compiled and provided by the Transportation Clerk.
Cost Containment – Initiates new routing and driver's bids when appropriate to adjust for seasonal volume, reviews department expenses, evaluates equipment needs and operates within budgeted guidelines.
Monitors pallet control functions.People First – Administers employee review process, monitors driver's pay structure, ensures People First incentives are effective and in place, provides training and guidance to dispatchers on people issues, maintains effective driver's schedules that promote employee satisfaction.
Safety – Monitors and maintains strict DOT compliance in the areas of Hours of Service, Drug and Alcohol Testing, Driver Qualification Files and Accident Records.
Holds quarterly driver safety meetings. Maintains an effective accident investigation and review process. Maintains high standards in the areas of hiring, new employee orientation, skill assessment and training and post accident training. Monitors/ maintains effective safety incentives. Provides ongoing support and communication in safety.Communicates with vehicle maintenance shop manager and personnel on specific tractor or trailer equipment maintenance and repair as needed.
EDUCATION:
High School Diploma
Degree in Logistics is preferred.
4 years transportation experience
Management experience in food service or grocery distribution is preferred.
Completes on-going management education through internal and external sources, as required. Membership in professional organization.
TECHNICAL EXPERTISE:
Ability to learn and utilize computer programs to advance functional aspects of assigned department. Ability to coach other employees in the effective use of programs. Basic Microsoft Office skills.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to read and compose professional reports and correspondence to recipients within and outside of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as sub total, grand total, discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages. Ability to express technical department-related mathematical concepts to line and management employees.
REASONING ABILITY
:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Ability to analyze complex technical information and concepts and to present this information to non-technical employees with line and management responsibilities.
