    The primary purpose of the Lab Manager is to oversee and maintain the Whiting-Turner (W-T) Infrastructure Engineering Laboratories in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

    The lab manager is responsible for running the day-to-day operations of the labs, overseeing undergraduate research or testing activities, training teaching assistants for course lab activities, training graduate and undergraduate research assistants in operating equipment and instrumentation, and to provide oversight to all users in the W-T labs.

    Additionally, the lab manager will assist in various activities in the Environmental Engineering Service Center (
    ESC).


    Responsibilities:
    Coordinates and manages all operational and technical functions of W-T Infrastructure Labs including equipment, instrumentation and testing service in the Structural,
    Geotechnical, Pavements and Materials Engineering Laboratory branches.
    Having knowledge or sufficient understanding and capability to handle troubleshooting electrical and electronic hardware and software diagnostic tools for performing
    operational assessment of existing and any new W-T laboratory instrumentation,
    including electronics, sensors, closed-loop servo-hydraulic and


    DAQ
    systems.
    Trains and supervises all lab users and acts as TA/RA technical support. Training in the operation of essential teaching lab equipment will be required in order to ensure proper
    maintenance. Included in the training is the management of standard operating procedures
    (SOPs), including writing, editing and disseminating.
    Oversee the organization and cleanliness of all W-T laboratory rooms. Monitor and maintain laboratory supplies and materials, purchasing and restocking as necessary.
    As the position progresses, the lab manager will be expected to research, design, develop, and integrate new lab equipment, such as a 3-D concrete printer, image analysis,


    NDT
    and
    other, into the lab based on the department's research interests and curricular needs.

    Work directly with faculty to write new protocols, develop new curricular strategies from the technical standpoint, and ensure all new equipment needs are met.

    Interact with other University of Maryland laboratories and/or outside commercial labs to support research and curricular needs, including fabrication of equipment and/or
    components to complement the W-T lab testing capabilities.
    Upon completion of training on laboratory equipment and components, candidates will be expected to have the required skills to conduct commercial testing using equipment available
    in the W-T Labs to serve local MD-VA-DC professional communities.
    Assistance with


    ESC
    will be a part of on-the-job training. These duties will include instrument usage tracking and billing, inventory, purchasing and restocking as necessary,
    website updates and editing of SOPs.
    Other duties as assigned, which include assuring laboratory compliance with the university (e.g., regulations implemented by the


    UMD
    Environmental Safety, Sustainability and
    Risk (
    ESSR) department), local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to laboratory
    safety, fire and chemical hazards. Online training for safe lab operation that is required by

    ESSR
    or other


    UMD
    departments. Prepare and update all laboratory safety manuals and lab signage, as well as safety data sheets,as required by the


    ESSR
    department.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Education:
    Bachelor's degree in engineering (preferably Civil or Mechanical Engineering).


    Experience:


    Knowledge of and minimum three (3) years experience in conducting large-scale structural testing projects, including with closed-loop servo-hydraulic testing systems.


    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    Proficient with PC, and standard software (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint,

    CAD ), as well as proficient at learning new equipment-specific software.
    Ability to expeditiously learn new equipment through both in-person and online/document review training.

    Physical Demands
    This position requires the individual to wear and work in personal protective equipment. This position requires that the individual is able to lifta minimum of 50lbs. and can maneuver large, cumbersome equipment. This individual may be working with potential chemical and/or biohazards related to research and teaching experiments.
