    ABOUT THE ROLES
Engineering staff in the Division of Traffic Engineering manage, direct and coordinate traffic designs, studies, and investigations for State roadways in the following units:

    Traffic Engineering Operations
The Operations Unit of the Division of Traffic Engineering works closely with Local Traffic Authorities (LTAs) and elected officials.

This unit supports the Office of the State Traffic Administration (OSTA) as well as the Office of Maintenance and District Traffic Engineers regarding existing traffic engineering operations on our state highways.

This includes investigation of traffic control devices, providing policy guidance, and offering solutions to traffic engineering operations issues.

    Project Design

The Project Design Unit designs and reviews temporary traffic control, signs and pavement markings, and traffic control signals for construction projects.

The unit also prepares and reviews traffic operational analyses and provides input on proposed project concepts.

This unit develops and maintains the asset management program for signs on State roadways and administers the Railway-Highway Grade Crossing program.

    Traffic Signals
The Traffic Signals unit is responsible for the design and management of over 2500 state-owned traffic signals.

This unit is comprised of Traffic Signal Asset Management, Traffic Signal Project Management, Traffic Electrical, and the Traffic Signal Lab.

Key responsibilities include programming, designing, and management of state-owned traffic signal installation and upgrade projects.

    Safety Engineering

The Safety Engineering Unit works to prevent fatal and serious injury crashes on state and local roadways in Connecticut through the implementation of Connecticut's Strategic Highway Safety Plan and the Highway Safety Improvement Program.

The unit researches and implements new and innovative solutions such as new types of roadway configurations, signals, signs, and pavement markings, proven to save lives and reduce serious injuries.

Safety Engineering also develops transportation policies, standards, guidelines, and practices related to highway safety, and advocates the use and implementation of the Highway Safety Manual.

We also help build and strengthen relationships between State and Local officials to help prevent and resolve roadway safety issues on all public roads in Connecticut.
