The Department of Permitting Services is seeking to fill an Electrical Permitting and Code Enforcement Compliance Inspector position in the Commercial Electrical and FPS Inspections unit.

The Department of Permitting Services' (DPS) primary mission is to promote the health, safety, welfare, and economic wellbeing of residents, businesses, and communities in Montgomery County with timely, professional, transparent, and consistent review and processing of plans and permits and through inspections of structures, rights-of-way, and development.


The primary purpose of this Permitting and Code Compliance Inspector position is to perform and document on-site inspections for compliance with plans, permit requirements, engineering standards, and all applicable County, State, and federal laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and guidelines as per NFPA 70 National Electrical Code in buildings under construction or renovation.

Where problems are found, the inspector works with on-site contractors and or project managers to schedule and implement corrective actions.

At times, this work takes place in conditions of moderate to severe physical risk.
- completes and maintains detailed records of all inspections and supporting documents related to any aspect of fire and life safety systems; product design and installation specifications; as well as correspondence.
- works as a team member with other employees to facilitate client service and resolve difficult code/law-enforcement/interpretation problems with developers, contractors, engineers, architects, and homeowners through meetings and discussions conducted in the office or field.
- determines when alternative construction or installation methods and materials represent equivalency for compliance with codes.
- keeps abreast of new technologies, methods, products, and developments in the fire protection field.

This position may be underfilled as

Permitting & Code Compliance Inspector II, Grade 21 Salary: $63,642 - $101,175

Permitting & Code Compliance Inspector I, Grade 19 Salary: $58,578 - $92,646


This position REQUIRES the possession of a valid driver's license from applicant's state of residence and the ability to drive a county vehicle to attend meetings, transport materials, or perform work at locations outside the office, which include locations throughout Montgomery County.

Minimum Qualifications
If filled at the Permitting and Code Enforcement Inspector I, Grade 19:

Experience:
Three (3) years of experience in the electrical/inspection industry.


Education:

Completion of high school or possession of a High School Certification of Completion recognized by the State of Maryland.

A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Master Electrician License or closely related field is preferred.

For applicants possessing a degree in an appropriate area, the experience requirement may be reduced to one year instead of three.


Equivalency:
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

If filled at the Permitting and Code Enforcement Inspector II, Grade 21:

Experience:
Five (5) years of experience in the electrical/inspection industry. At least one (1) year of experience should be in a code compliance/enforcement capacity.


Education:

Completion of high school or possession of a High School Certification of Completion recognized by the State of Maryland.

A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Master Electrician License or closely related field is preferred.

For applicants possessing a degree in an appropriate area, the experience requirement may be reduced to two years instead of five.


Equivalency:
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

If filled at the Permitting and Code Enforcement Inspector III, Grade 23:

Education and Experience:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and three (5) years of experience in electrical/inspector of which one year must have been in a code compliance/enforcement capacity Master Electrician License; or graduation from high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland and seven (7) years of experience in electrical/inspections of which one year must have been in a code compliance/enforcement capacity.


Equivalency:
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
