Job Responsibilities/Duties
Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) seeks a Hazardous Material Specialist to join the Waste Technical Services organization. The Hazardous Materials Specialist will provide characterization and program support for all radiological and non-radiological waste types (Low Level Waste, High Level Waste, Mixed Waste). This position will provide broad-based technical and regulatory support for ongoing WRPS waste management efforts and technical support for specific projects. The Hazardous Material Specialist will also perform calculations to support waste management and characterization efforts and create and identify documentation to be revised based on the regulations, results of calculations and other efforts. Support effective implementation and regulatory compliance of waste management programs. The Hazardous Material Specialist will incorporate conventional engineering or scientific practices broad range of highly complex technical requirements to meet WRPS' Waste Program needs.
The Hazardous Material Specialist's duties and responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
Lead, develop, prepare and coordinate waste stream profile technical documentation to support calculations and incorporates into Waste Certification Plans.
Interface with regulators (EPA, DOE, Washington State).
Interface with WRPS Solid Waste Engineering to resolve complex technical questions concerning waste stream profiles, calculations, packaging, and procedures.
Provide leadership and direction to facility personnel involved with all aspects of waste management, packaging, and transportation.
Perform field walk downs and assessments to ensure field work is performed to meet waste stream profiles, calculations and procedures.
Review work packages for potential generation of waste streams.
Verify for compliance with WRPS' waste acceptance criteria requirements.
Develop, edit and prepare Waste Program manuals and procedures.
Assure that packaging and shipment of all hazardous and radioactive materials are performed in accordance with all federal, state and local regulations.
Evaluate complex hazardous materials packaging, transportation, handling and associated activities for compliance and acceptability.
Develop, implement and coordinate programs and procedures for packaging, transport and disposal of hazardous materials.
Perform peer verification on hazardous materials offered for shipment.
Provide leadership to less experienced specialists and facility personnel on packaging and shipment of hazardous materials.
Serve as chemical coordinator for entire WRPS chemical inventory, including the identification, tracking, coordination of use and disposal of all chemical inventory.
Hazardous Materials Specialist responsibilities will also include:
Shipment planning and forecasting.
Project coordination.
Schedule control and development.
Project interfaces and project leadership.
Designation of waste and assignment of federal and state waste codes.
Advise generators on waste management and packaging.
Review and approve Project Waste Management Plans.
Shipment paperwork preparation.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Grade 17:
Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in a scientific discipline or a related field; and
Six (6) years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Grade 18:
Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in a scientific discipline or a related field; and
Eight (8) years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Desired Qualifications
Experience with Title 49 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR).
Experience with application of Washington State, DOE and DOT regulations and requirements.
