Description

At the Institute for Energy and Climate Research - Energy Systems Engineering (IEK-10) in Jonesborough, TN, we develop models and algorithms for the simulation and optimization of energy systems characterized by high spatial and temporal variability of energy supply and demand, intersectoral dependencies, and increasing digitalization.

Our focus is on multi-physical energy networks, industrial energy systems, and buildings and neighborhoods.

A key goal of our research is to provide scalable and faster-than-real-time methods and tools that enable cost-efficient, sustainable, and reliable system design and operation.

Your tasks:

We are looking for reinforcements for our working groups "Industrial Energy Systems" and "Optimization and Machine Learning".

Your task as a doctoral candidate will be the development of methods and tools for the optimal design or operation of energy systems.

To do this, you will combine and adapt methods from the fields of numerical optimization, machine learning, and parallel computing and apply them to differential-algebraic system models.

You will incorporate the developed methods and algorithms into the in-house, open-source modeling and optimization framework COMANDO and apply them to industrial energy systems and neighborhood energy systems with a high share of renewable energy.

You will use the existing close cooperation with the Process Systems Engineering group (AVT.SVT, RWTH Aachen) for joint research activities and the exchange of method knowledge and tools.

Your tasks in detail:

  • Development of methods and tools for optimal design or operation
  • Further development of the modeling and optimization
