- Trains and supervises Sanitation employees in various aspects of solid waste collection operations, including: the collection of trash, brush, and other solid waste from the City utilizing various types of motorized heavy equipment; roll cart inventory, delivery, replacement and repair; street can maintenance and service; and other similar tasks.
- Assigns and monitors progress of daily work tasks. Uses AVL technology to review and assign routes and to track daily progress.
- Recommends and participates in personnel management and decisions, including hiring, coaching, performance evaluations, promotions, and disciplinary actions.
- Responds orally and in writing to inquiries and complaints from both internal and external sources. Meets with customers to evaluate and resolve service issues.
- Serves as code enforcement officer to ensure compliance with Solid Waste Ordinance.
- Ensures proper maintenance, cleaning, and operation of vehicles and equipment.
- Conducts accident and injury investigations.
- Performs administrative duties, including processing service orders; accurate recording and approval of employee time; processing employee requests for time off; and maintaining records and spreadsheets related to collections operations and code enforcement.
- Supports and promotes City safety policies and guidelines.
- Fills in and performs duties of other Sanitation staff as needed, including but not limited to other supervisors, operations manager, office staff, drivers, and loaders.
- Leads and actively participates in meetings
- Makes recommendations and implements programs to improve efficiency, safety, and sustainability of operations.

- What you Bring:
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
- A minimum of 3 years of related experience in public or environmental health, sanitation, or code enforcement with some supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
- GIS experience (preferred)
- Valid North Carolina Commercial Driver's License (minimum Class B) required.
- Forklift certification preferred (Required to acquire within 6 months of hire.)
- Flagger Training and Basic Work Zone Installer (Required to acquire within 6 months of hire.)
- Advanced knowledge of procedures and practices to analyze and resolve unusual or difficult problems.
- Ability to read, summarize and /or compare general workplace data and graphics, such as flowcharts, maps, tables, etc.
- Ability to conduct basic research of existing, internal policies and procedures, best practices and innovative techniques.
- Ability to think creatively in all areas for the primary purpose of increasing efficiency and effectiveness.
- Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written form.
- Ability to research program documents and narrative materials, and develop reports from information gathered.

Summary
The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Area Supervisor of Code Enforcement in the Public Works department. The purpose of this position is to supervise crews and/or contractors in the collection and disposal of solid waste, and to serve as a code enforcement officer as needed with regards to matters of solid waste collection and disposal. This Area Supervisor's primary role will be to supervise brush collection operations.
