- Assists physicians and nurses in the performance of diagnostic examinations by performing duties such as monitoring vital signs, preparing and positioning the patient, or by performing a variety of routine diagnostic tests i.e. glucometer test for blood glucose level, EKGs, bladder scanning, and collection of urine sample and other procedures with validated competencies.
- Performs a complete range of treatment procedures such as; routine urinary catheter care; application of condom catheters; external application of cold and heat with RN or LPN direction; emptying of colostomy or other duties as assigned by the RN or LPN.
- Performs selected treatments such as foot-soaks, and applications of non-prescribed topical lotions, performs basic care to patients requiring the use of isolation techniques.
- Checks and records vital signs, weights, and heights and reports deviations from normal to the professional nurse.
- Collects and labels specimens (urine, stool, and sputum).
- Measures and records intake and output.
- Assists by positioning and draping as well as emotionally supporting patients during a variety of diagnostic and treatment procedures.
- Assists physicians, nurses, and other healthcare team members in the care and treatment of Veteran patients receiving medical surgical or emergency treatment. Observes and reports to the professional nurse changes in patient behavior, attitude, bodily complaints/pain and appearance.
- Observes patients for any change in condition (deviation in color, pulse, respiration, temperature and blood pressure) and reports them to the assigned RN or LPN. Reports the condition of wounds and skin and any reaction to or results of treatments.
- Performs a wide variety of duties aimed at increasing the comfort and spirit of the patient.
- Takes care of patients' routine care and comfort needs for psycho/social/spiritual well-being, personal hygiene, physical comfort, nutrition, elimination, prevention of skin breakdown, rehabilitation, safety, etc.

Summary
The Minneapolis VA Health Care System (VAHCS) is a teaching hospital providing a full range of patient care services with state-of-the-art technology, as well as education and research. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary care, tertiary care and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics and extended care.
Duties
This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until September 30, 2024 and may be extended until all vacancies are filled. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be May 9th. Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur on an as-needed basis until positions are filled.
As a member of the nursing care team, the Nursing Assistant (NA) offers physiological, psychological, and spiritual support to the VA patients by performing a variety of duties, including direct patient care, department organization and other duties as assigned, to meet the changing needs of the patients and nursing department. All care is delivered to patients in a respectful, non-judgmental manner. NAs participate in selected Continuous Improvement (CI) activities as directed.
The purpose of this role is to support the health care team in delivering individualized patient care designed to achieve the optimal health goals. The NA duties are performed on a Hem/Onc- Medical/Surgical Ward under the direction of the Registered Nurse. NAs' may provide coverage for areas other than the ward hired into.

This occupational series is eligible for the Student Loan Repayment Program (SLRP). Repayment is limited to $10,000 annually, up to $60,000 in lifetime awards. Participants must sign a service agreement and maintain an acceptable level of performance to remain eligible for this program.
