- Sign an agreement with the Seminole County Sheriff's Office
- Begin a Commission-approved Basic Recruit Training Program within 180 days of being placed on as a TEA Trainee; Fulfill all of the requirements of the Corrections Academy (Candidates that fail to complete and/or pass the academy or the Corrections Certification Exam will be required to reimburse the Seminole County Sheriff's Office for all expenses incurred)
- Successfully complete eight (8) hours of firearms training, which shall include demonstration of proficiency in the presence of a Commission-certified firearms instructor
- Sucessfully complete a Commision-approved Basic Recruit Training Program within eighteen (18) months of beginning Training Program
- Achieve a passing score on the State Officer Certification Examination (SOCE) within one hundred eighty (180) days from the date that basic recruit training was completed
- Follow all policies, procedures and general orders of the Seminole County Sheriff's Office
- Follow all policy and procedures of the college that is hosting the academy
- Pass the BAT (Basic Abilities Test), PAT (Physical Abilities Test) and the Civil Service written exam and achieve a score of 70% or higher in each of the four (4) sections (math, reading comprehension, spelling/grammar, and report writing)
- Supervising inmates to prevent altercations
- Maintaining accurate count and current location of all inmates
- Communicating effectively and coherently with other officers and inmates
- Demonstrating communications skills in court and other formal settings
- Ensure the cleanliness of the area of assigned responsibility
- Perform crisis intervention functions to include counseling, suicide prevention, recognizing abnormal behavior, and taking appropriate action
- Maintain detailed documentation
- Applicant must be at least 18 years of age
- Applicant must be a United States citizen
- Applicant must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License
- Selected applicants will be requested to sign an Employment Agreement for a 2-year time commitment in position from successful completion of the agency's field training program
- Applicants who do not successfully complete the academy will be required to reimburse the Sheriff's Office for all expenses incurred up to the last active training date
- Upon successful completion of the academy, applicants are required to pass the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) state exam
- Applicant must pass a physical examination with drug screening and a psychological evaluation by a licensed physician
- All applicants must submit to a thorough background investigation in accordance with FDLE standards
- All applicants will be required to take a Physical Abilities Test (P.A.T.) and Civil Service Written Examination and must achieve a score of 70% or higher in each of the four (4) sections (math, reading comprehension, spelling/grammar, and report writing)

General DescriptionThe Seminole County Sheriff's Office is now accepting pre-screen questionnaires for DETENTION DEPUTY TEA (TEMPORARILY EMPLOYED OR APPOINTED) TRAINEE SPONSORSHIP FOR CORRECTIONS.
As a Temporarily Employed or Appointed (TEA) Detention Deputy within the Seminole County Sheriff's Office Sponsorship program provides qualified candidates the opportunity to begin training within the John E. Polk Correctional Facility. Subsequently, trainees will begin their basic recruit training at an approved and certified Corrections Training Academy to become a Certified Detention Deputy.
Florida Statute Temporary employment or appointment; minimum basic recruit training exemptions), states that an employing agency, "may temporarily employ or appoint a person who complies with the qualifications for employment".
Detention Deputies perform generalized corrections work in the care, custody, control and re-entry of sentenced and non-sentenced inmates at the John E. Polk Correctional Facility.
A Detention Deputy is a uniformed officer who is responsible for the care, custody, control and re-entry of sentenced and non-sentenced inmates. As a Detention Deputy, your role includes helping provide offenders with the tools necessary to become law-abiding citizens upon release. Detention Deputies maintain a consistent routine and demeanor while supervising offenders.
The hourly base salary for this position while in the Corrections academy is $20.00 an hour. After completion of the Corrections academy, you will receive the starting Detention Deputy salary of $52, $23.26 per hour), plus the potential for additional holiday pay up to $2,800 for those employees who work twelve (12) hour shifts. The Sheriff's Office offers a competitive benefits package including retirement benefits under the Florida Retirement System, paid medical/dental/life insurance, generous leave accrual, wellness benefits, education incentives and assistance.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
Each applicant must complete a NOTARIZED Background Investigation Waiver (Download PDF reader) and an SCSO PAT waiver (Download PDF reader). Failure to submit both documents will delay your application. Any costs associated with the completion of the background waiver is the responsibility of the applicant. Successful candidates will be hired as employees of the Seminole County Sheriff's Office. They will begin training in the John E. Polk Correctional Facility before attending the Corrections Academy on a start date yet to be determined at Valencia College or other location as determined.
**NOTE: Selected applicants will not be paid/reimbursed for mileage driving to and from the Corrections Academy.**

WORKING CONDITIONS
The work environment is mostly within the confined setting of the John E. Polk Correctional Facility, Seminole County Juvenile Facility or the Seminole County Court System. This position generally works a shift (days or nights) with rotating days off.

Successful applicants will be required to complete and submit an entire employment application, which will be provided to the applicant by the Human Resources Division. The applicant will then submit to a thorough background investigation, which includes, but not limited to, past employment/education verification, driver license review, credit history, prior drug use history, arrest/conviction record, and computerized voice stress analysis (CVSA) testing. A certified examiner administers the CVSA with questions addressing illegal drug use and general questions of honesty and criminal history. Any dishonesty or deception on the Pre-Screen Questionnaire or Employment Application will disqualify your application.
The background investigation process may take 3-6 months depending upon the complexity of the applicant's background and position for which you've applied. Applicants selected for employment will be provided a conditional offer and required to submit to a medical examination with drug screening.
Candidates must also comply with the Agency's current Tattoo and Body Ornamentation Policy. A copy of General Order 28 - Dress and Appearance can be accessed here. An applicant's tattoos and body ornamentation must be disclosed at the time of application and will be documented as part of the agency's review process, even if otherwise meeting the Agency's policy.
