    POSITION SUMMARY/JOB PURPOSE:
    Peer Specialists provide services under the Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) model which offers a more comprehensive, holistic, and integrated model of treatment. Mental Health Peer support services are designed to foster hope and promote recovery belief for individuals who have experienced a mental challenge or family members who have faced mental health challenges. The Mental Health Peer Specialist role involves assisting individuals with mental illness throughout the recovery journey, helping them gain skills, access resources, and regain confidence to succeed in society. Mental Health Peer Specialists collaborate with other staff to guide individuals in service entry, bridge service gaps, provide transportation, and connect with community resources. By offering non-judgmental and compassionate assistance, this position helps individuals understand their situations and develop coping strategies for positive change.
    This position operates independently, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.
    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
    Education Required: High School Diploma or GED
    Experience Required: At least 1 year of experience working with individuals with mental illness.
    Registration, Certification, Licensure or other Qualifications Required:
    • Must maintain a valid Texas Driver's license, auto liability insurance and a driving record acceptable to PermiaCare's insurance requirements.
    • Required to pass criminal history and background checks as well as pre-employment drug screen.
    • Must obtain Mental Health Peer Specialist certification within 6 months.
    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Provide direct support services to clients as directed by supervisor including help patients navigate PermiaCare and other systems within the community, use evidence-based models for peer support service delivery, transport individuals, assist with understanding and communicating with medical personnel.
    • Provide holistic care across the health spectrum by addressing all needs identified by the client.
    • Provide indirect support services to clients as directed by supervisor.
    • Encourage client and family participation, respecting privacy, confidentiality and client consent.
    • Offer individual and group peer support services to consumers with severe and persistent mental illness (if applicable).
    • Participate in Advisory Committees as assigned.
    • Support clients, encouraging their treatment and recovery goal choices.
    • Help clients develop wellness and self-worth.
    • Offer emotional support and encouragement to peers facing challenges.
    • Assist peers in accessing available community resources.
    • Advocate for peer rights while ensuring their safety.
    • Document peer interactions, conversations, and progress.
    • Educate peers on mental health, substance use, and self-care.
    • Meet unit performance measures or targets.
    • Maintain assigned caseload of individuals with mental illness.
    • Coordinate services for designated caseload.
    • Ensure accurate and timely documentation of services.
    • Maintain confidentiality of records and treatment information in compliance with laws and regulations.
    • Maintain regular, reliable on-site attendance.
    • Comply with policy requirements for Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation reporting as well as Code of Conduct and Standards of Behavior.
    • Establish effective work relationships.
    • Regular communication with supervisor.
    • Process mail/email promptly.
    • Answer phone, take messages, and respond timely.
    • Maintain safe working environment.
    • Utilize a trauma-informed approach in all interactions.
    • Represent PermiaCare professionally in the community.
    • Maintain legal compliance and current driver's license.
    • Complete assigned training promptly.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
    MARGINAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (non-essential duties):
    • Assist other Peer Support Specialists as needed.
    • Apply knowledge of Medicaid covered services and appropriate application and coding.
    • Document progress notes as required.
    • Engage in direct and indirect client support activities.
    • Complete documentation within assigned timeframes.
    • Provide translation services if needed.
    • Attend meetings and community activities as necessary.
    • Participate in assigned workgroups and committees.
    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES:
    • Understanding of mental illness, treatment, and care systems.
    • Familiarity with Medicaid services and their application.
    • Ability to provide non-judgmental and compassionate support.
    • Knowledge of community resources and HIPAA regulations.
    • Strong multi-tasking and organizational skills.
    • Effective communication, time management, and customer service abilities.
    • Cultural sensitivity and adaptability.
    • Proficiency in computer applications.
    • Ability to coordinate with diverse personnel.
    • Skills in reasoning, analysis, and interpersonal communication.

    • Capacity to work independently and collaboratively.
    • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
