    Headwaters School, a Pre-K through grade 12 independent day school serving 530 students across its three campuses in Austin, TX, is seeking a full-time Long-Term High School Substitute Teacher for the 2024 Fall Semester.

    The course load for this position will include teaching High School sections of Theory of Knowledge Year II, Integrated History and Social Studies, a Social Justice elective and a High School advisory. Candidates will also be prepared to participate in the life of the school, including, but not limited to supervision of lunch, chaperoning day trips and one overnight trip, attending faculty meetings and student community gatherings as needed, and other duties as assigned by the Director of the High School.

    This position includes professional development for the IB curriculum. Headwaters School covers the cost of the training course. Training must be completed on or before September 9th, 2024.

    About this Position:

    Long-term Substitute Teachers are responsible for providing and implementing the daily lesson plans according to the School's requirements. In addition, they are charged with managing the classroom environment, providing activities, materials, and promoting student learning in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. This position will start mid September.

    Job Requirements:

    • Bachelor's Degree required, degree in History, Government, or Economics preferred
    • Prior experience teaching in a High School, required
    • Ability to attend a 2 night, 3 day school camping trip held in October
    • A love and appreciation of high school students, required Knowledge & Skills:
      • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
      • General knowledge of curriculum and instruction, and a willingness to collaborate with colleagues to learn and grow
      • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
      • Ability to follow oral and written directions
      • Ability to maintain effective classroom management strategies
      • Ability to become competent in Blackbaud, the learning management tool the school uses to set assignments, communicate with families, and input grades
      • Clear driving record and ability to drive a van to different locations in the city
      • Willingness to help students grow their leadership, self-advocacy, compassion, and sense of connectedness to each other Working Conditions:

        Services are generally provided within a standard classroom environment. Some movement throughout the classroom is generally necessary to facilitate learning (e.g., standing, walking, stooping, bending, sitting, and/or kneeling). Light lifting of materials and other objects associated within a classroom environment is required (e.g., books, teaching aids, up to approximately 20 to 40 lbs.). Ability to be outdoors and lead students in a movement-based class, including driving them at times to nearby locations in the city. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.         This is a temporary teaching position and compensation is competitive for the greater Austin area.
