Summary:

With leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, school counselors aim to boost student success. They offer preventive services and address identified student needs through a comprehensive school counseling program focusing on academic, career, and social/emotional development for all students.

The key responsibilities of the school counselor role align with the North Carolina State Board of Education's directive that every public school student should graduate ready for work, postsecondary education, and life in the modern era.

Essential Duties:


DEVELOPS AND MANAGES A COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL COUNSELING PROGRAM- Collaborates with school administrators on the counseling program, creates a detailed plan based on NC Comprehensive School Counseling Standard Course of Study and school data while utilizing this data to tailor programs meeting student needs. Communicates program goals to stakeholders and maintains relevant resources. Focuses most of their time on direct services through Guidance Curriculum, Individual Student Planning, and Preventive and Responsive Services with the remainder on program management, support, and accountability.


DELIVERY OF A COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL COUNSELING PROGRAM- Leads and works with educators to integrate the State Guidance Curriculum Standard. Conducts group activities aligning with student needs and school objectives, ensuring students gain necessary life skills for success. Provides counseling to students for academic, career, and social/emotional growth, collaborating with parents, teachers, and community resources. Implements effective referral and follow-up processes where needed.

ACCOUNTABILITY- Audits the program annually, collects and analyzes data for guidance, measures results, and monitors student performance to facilitate interventions. Acts in accordance with laws, policies, and ethical standards.

Education and Experience:


Minimum:


  • Master's degree in school counseling from an accredited college or university, or
  • Master's degree in equivalent field with addon school counseling licensure
  • Completion of school counseling internship

Desirable:


  • Experience as a school counselor

Licensing / Certification Requirements:
NC licensure in school counseling (Department of Public Instruction license for public education)
