The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training.

Position Summary

The Physician Assistant for clinical care will assist the Interventional Radiology Physicians in the admission of patients receiving elective radiological treatment, the clinical care of patients on the radiology service, participation in procedures both as an assistant and the primary operator.

To this end, our goals are: To develop a clinical service for the care of radiology patients. To assist and monitor the Physician Assistant in the care of Interventional Radiology Physicians. To make sure that patients requiring evaluation or consultation by the radiology service are evaluated by the Physician Assistant

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of Interventional Radiology, the Physician Assistant will be responsible for assisting Radiologists in the clinical care of patients.
Responsible for patient care regarding patient management, diagnosis, treatment planning, and ordering of pertinent tests, therapeutics and medications as noted by NYS law and hospital policy/by-laws (includes controlled substances with DEA licensure).
Writes accurately and in timely manner into patient records for all pertinent care, status changes, orders, progress notes, procedure notes and admit/discharge notes.
Demonstrates ability to work and communicate effectively with medical teams and other associated staffing; Provides consultation to nursing and ancillary medical teams and staff of patient condition and plan of care.
Performs and assists in obtaining outpatient clinical consultations.
Determines abnormal conditions by administering or ordering diagnostic tests and laboratory studies. Follows-up on x-rays and laboratory data. Interprets diagnostic test results.
Assesses patient health by interview and by obtaining and/or updating medical history. Documents patient care services by charting in patient and department records
Works collaboratively with supervising physician(s) and care team in a timely manner with respect, and with the goals of patient-centered safety and quality as a priority.
Knowledge and adherence of clinical and institutional policy and procedure related to clinical practice and practice site operations.
Performs non-complex interventional radiological procedures in accordance with established departmental credentialing procedures, after sufficient proctorship and documentation of experience. Participate in the on-call duties. (see Table 1 below)
Assist physicians during performance of complex interventional radiological procedures.
Assists in the pre- and post-procedural care of patients undergoing interventional radiological procedures. Communicates assessment, treatment and care planning to patient, families and designated caretakers in effective and compassionate manner.
Performs and records admission history and physical examinations and writes initial orders, obtains consent for radiological procedures, writes post procedure orders and follows up with patients post procedure.
Maintains clinical records and assists with the documentation of patient care.
Advises the medical service of patients with other medical conditions requiring internal medicine or subspecialty consultation. These patients will have been identified by the attending radiologist.
Promotes self-learning and maintenance of continued medical education (CME) requirements for board certification and practice of evidenced-based medicine.
Promotes self-development and growth as a clinical leader with expertise in designated clinical area.
Participates in interdisciplinary meetings to improve patient care, quality, safety and throughput

Procedures/Responsibilities that May Be Delegated to PAs based on physician assessment of the PA's ability to perform those cases safely include but are not limited to the following list:

Requesting consultations from other medical services
Ordering of laboratory tests and imaging studies
Manage medical/surgical emergencies and initiate appropriate therapies until arrival of physician
Communicating with referring services
Established patient follow-up/evaluation and management billing
Clinic visits/management
Write prescriptions
Admissions/discharges
Patient education
Obtaining informed consent
First-assisting on procedures
Prescribe conscious sedation (varies by state)
Wound care
Suturing dislodged catheter
Vascular access
Peripherally inserted central catheters
Central venous port placement, removal, and revision
Nontunneled central venous catheter placement
Tunneled central venous catheter placement, exchange, and removal
Biopsies
Drainages
Abscess
Empyema
Seroma
Chest tube placement
Tunneled chest tubes for drainage of pleural effusions
Tunneled peritoneal catheters for ascites drainage
Thoracentesis
Paracentesis
Baker cyst aspiration
Drain exchange/removal
Vein sclerotherapy
Ambulatory phlebectomy
Hysterosalpingography

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Physician Assistant studies plus five years of experience
Current NYS licensure
NCCPA certification
DEA required
