Employees that hold a Class A CDL will receive an additional $0.40 per hour. Employees that hold a Class B CDL will receive an additional $0.25 per hour.Essential Functions Operates a variety of equipment, machinery, vehicles and tools used in road construction, maintenance and repair projects; conducts maintenance on equipment, machinery, vehicles, and tools used in road construction.
Transports, loads and unloads various materials and equipment used in projects.Performs manual work functions associated with construction, maintenance and repair projects.
Assists in locating underground cables and gas lines prior to beginning construction work.
Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition.
Utilizes precautionary safety equipment and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
Coordinates and/or assists in setting up special events/activities; assists with traffic control and litter pickup; assists departments with moving heavy furniture, files, or other heavy materials.
Responds to emergency calls during hurricanes, inclement weather, or other emergency situations.Prepares or completes various forms, correspondence, reports, and other documents.
Receives various forms, reports, manuals, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information and assistance; takes and relays messages or directs calls to appropriate personnel; returns calls as necessary.
Performs other related duties as assigned.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of simple arithmetic functions.
Skill in operating and controlling the actions of the same equipment, machinery, and/or objects.

Minimum QualificationsEducation and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by vocational/technical training in mechanics; supplemented by three (3) years previous experience and/or training that includes heavy equipment operation and road maintenance/construction; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job
Licenses or Certifications:
Valid State of Alabama driver's license; valid Alabama Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
Additional InformationPHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work is moderate work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force.
Work requires regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, taste, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals.
