    Job DescriptionGENERAL SUMMARY

    This position is responsible for educating and mentoring Birth-to-Five Head Start classroom teachers and teacher assistants. The position is part of the management team responsible for working together to provide leadership in coordinating efforts in the areas of Early Childhood Development and Disability Services. The Teacher Mentor will assist the Education/Disabilities supervisors, the Director, and the Program Operations Manager with assurance of overall program compliance with the Head Start Performance Standards and regulations, including environmental health standards, Program Policies and Procedures, and applicable Tribal Personnel Policies. The Teacher Mentor will routinely conduct in-person classroom observations and provide supportive feedback for improvement and sustainment in meeting our high quality educational and disabilities services and overall program excellence.

    This position ensures the confidentiality, security, and accuracy of records, and promotes positive employee, customer, and community relations. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required and outstanding customer service to fellow employees, customers, vendors, etc. is expected. Regular attendance is required, and on occasion, later hours or weekend time may be required with project deadlines and a neat well-groomed professional appearance is essential at all times.

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Primary responsibilities are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform.     • Provide observations, coaching, leadership and guidance to classroom teachers and teacher assistants.
    • Assess all education staff to identify individual and team strengths and areas in need of improvement for additional mentoring support and locate/create training opportunities and resources as needed.
    • Establish process for intensive coaching to ensure opportunities for classroom observations.
    • Provide feedback and modeling of effective teacher practices directly related to program goals, expectations, and standards.
    • Support program operations by assisting in the creation and maintenance of program policies, procedures, service plans, and resources.
    • Responsible for the continuous development and growth of staff's professional, leadership, critical thinking, behavioral management, and problem-solving skills.
    • Assist with creating, establishing, and periodically updating policies that ensure assessment results are not used to solely determine punitive actions for teachers and teaching teams identified as 'needing support', without providing time and resources for staff to improve.
    • Ensure each family with child(ren) in our Head Start programs receive the required amount of home visits.
    • Assist with the development and implementation of weekly lesson plans and ensure monthly curriculum planning meetings are conducted in collaboration with all Head Start programs staff.
    • Work, in collaboration, with Education staff and management to set School Readiness Goals that align with Head Start Performance Standards, Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework, and Yelm & North Thurston School Districts.
    • Contribute to the recruitment process and enrollment of all Head Start programs eligible children/families.
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience
    • Bachelor's degree in early childhood education or related field with an endorsement in Early Childhood Education, or work towards a degree within 9 months after hire
    • Must be CLASS reliable or become CLASS reliable within 9 months from hire date.
    • Must pass an initial communicable disease test.
    • Must obtain TB test prior to employment and annually thereafter.
    • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's license and maintain a driving record that meets the minimum requirements established by Nisqually Indian Tribes vehicle insurance provider.
    • Successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.
    • The ability to work with vulnerable populations including adults and children.
    • Must pass a State and National (FBI) criminal history background check prior to employment.
    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Experience working with a multidisciplinary team.
    • Experience creating and instructing head start curriculum.
    • Knowledge of Federal, State, and Tribal Head Start laws and regulations.
    • Knowledge of the Nisqually Indian Tribe's history, customs, traditions, and ability to demonstrate cultural sensitivity.
    • Experience working with Federally Recognized Tribes.
    SUPERVISION

    This position does not supervise.

    COMPETENCIES Possesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the primary responsibilities of the position. · Knowledge of Laws and regulations related to Early Childhood Development.· Knowledge of Head Start curriculum and assessment tools, including Teaching Strategies GOLD, Creative Curriculum, Second Steps, Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS), Ages & Stages, and Child Plus. · Knowledge of Reflective Supervision Model for teachers and educational staff development. · Knowledge of Pedagogy and child development.· Skill in Addressing difficult and sensitive situations in a professional manner.· Skill in Coaching and mentoring.· Skill in Verbal and written communication.· Ability to Perform multiple high-level tasks simultaneously with minimal daily guidance.· Utilize the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) assessment tool and maintain annual CLASS compliance. · Assess individual and team performance to locate areas of improvement, develop and implement action plans, and provide mentorship.PHYSICAL DEMANDS
